1,071 Additional Coronavirus Cases As County Moves Into Phase 3 Of Reopening

Los Angeles County is reporting 1,071 additional COVID-19 coronavirus cases and 19 deaths on Monday as more businesses reopen through the Southland, officials said.

The L.A. County “Safer at Home” order relaxed last week as the county moved into Phase 3 of reopening, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Gyms, schools and sports without live audiences were allowed to reopen starting June 12, as Los Angeles County continues the COVID-19 recovery,

Day camps, museums, galleries, zoos, aquariums and outdoor recreation areas, including swimming pools, were also allowed to reopen last Friday.

Music, film and television production were also allowed to commence starting June 12 with modifications.

Although Phase 3 has allowed many businesses to resume activity, there are many establishments that have not yet been given permission to open.

Bars and nightclubs, tattoo shops, nail salons and youth sports leagues must remain closed in L.A. County.

In addition, live performance theaters, entertainment centers, concert halls and venues, stadiums, arenas, gaming facilities, theme parks and festivals still remain closed or canceled.

An additional 1,071 COVID-19 cases were reported Monday throughout Los Angeles County.

The County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 73,791 according to Ferrer.

Over 825,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about 8 percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

However, she noted previously that 86 percent of people who tested positive were asymptomatic, underlining the need for social distancing and other measures in order to prevent spread to others.

7,337 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 10 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 1,285 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

19 new deaths were reported Monday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,926 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

Ferrer noted that the number of cases and deaths reported on Mondays tend to be lower due to backlogs from the weekend.

About 93 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

The percentage has stayed “consistent” through the pandemic, according to Public Health officials.

As of Sunday afternoon, a total of 2,728 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 880 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 39 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,719 in Castaic*
  • Five in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 39 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 12 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 23 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde

*As of Sunday, June 15, officials had recorded 1,311 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 485 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

An update on the cases in the Santa Clarita Valley is expected later Monday afternoon.

  1. 86% who tested positive are asymptomatic??!!

WOW, this is virus is so serious!!! People are dropping like flies left and right……um, the numbers say otherwise!

What a joke this whole thing has been! Now, we want to mess with natural selection. Man this world is soft and gone downhill.

  2. Can anyone explain why nail salons can’t open. Seriously.

  3. I believe that the nail salons are being punished because many of them are Asian owned. Many people blame Asians for the virus in the first place. Not all racists are anti black.

  4. Come on SCV residents, we are only allowed to protest BLM. Then we go back to Covid crisis and hype. Second wave speculations and theories.

  5. Most of the cases in Castaic are with the jail birds at the county lock up

  6. Why do the numbers not add up? If north facility has 1311 and detention has 485. That’s 1796. But castaic shows 1719 cases.
