11 Additional Santa Clarita Valley Coronavirus Cases Reported, 1,260 New L.A. County Cases

Almost a dozen additional coronavirus cases have been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 1,260 new cases reported across Los Angeles County Wednesday afternoon.

The total number of cases confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley now stands at 2,876 while the L.A. County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 89,490 as of Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

Public Health officials noted case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 2,876 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 1,005 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 40 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,734 in Castaic*
  • Five in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 51 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 12 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 25 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Three in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon

*As of Tuesday, June 23, officials had recorded 1,312 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 487 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 11 cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 20 in Acton.

The Department of Public Health has redistributed cases among several areas of Santa Clarita, causing a reduction in reported cases in Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 2,725 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 282 have tested positive, and 50 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to the hospital.

Some patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

There are 13 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, while 99 patients have been discharged, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

Case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend, however, the new case rate may also be slowing due to the closure of testing sites.

34 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 3,205 in Los Angeles County, according to public health officials.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. Dr Lawrence at Henry Mayo stayed, most likely the same amount of people will get sick and probably the same amount of people will die from COVID related. But we are spreading it out over a longer period. So hospitals are not overwhelmed.

It’s been successful. Open the schools. Open up sports. Open the pools. Those that are high risk should take precautions. Pitchess inmates seem to be handling corona just fine, so explain that? Where is all the projected death?

  2. You’re absolutely right Nicoletta, we need more death!!

  3. It’s the end of the world! 11 more cases! This has now become ridiculous. Of course take precautions and protect the vulnerable, but this is not the Black Plague. According to many doctors the severity of the virus has decreased. We cannot stop living our lives out of fear. We have become a society of wimps. We had better toughen up because we have some challenging days ahead that will be much worse than this virus if our country continues going down the tubes because of the out of control violence and thugs. Of course deal with racism and prosecute bad cops, but don’t throw out the whole system. This is nothing more than a power grab by the Marxists/Socialists using anarchy to try and take over politically. America is not perfect, but it is the best country in the world, just look at how many come to America. Believe it or not there is such a thing as forgiveness and second chances. People have become so angry and bitter at each other. Whatever happened to patience and believing the best about people? Long gone.

    • Jimmy; Agreed!! Corona virus is a valid concern for high risk people. Unfortunately, it’s been politicized and become a circus. It’s election year, that’s all I’m going to say.

    • 2016 brought a bitter and angry leader. Tiffany, you are right, it is an election year and Trump is afraid that his weak handling of the virus will hurt his chances, so he refuses to wear a mask & downplays it. There are many Republicans that are voting blue because of this, the way he tear-gassed peaceful protestors for his bible photo-op, his comments about women, the way he fires people who disagree with him, his rudeness to the journalists he feels victimized by(For example, a few months ago he couldn’t take the simple question: “Mr. President, many people are afraid due to the Coronavirus. What can you say to them?” He answered, “ I say you’re a lousy reporter.”) and the way he is not interested in learning facts or taking advice from those close to him. All that, and I didn’t even get into his political dealings.
Is someone who calls CoVID-19 the “Kung Flu” presidential?

  4. Why can’t you separate the jail totals from the Castaic
resident total? We need to see our actual cases without doing the math because it just doesn’t add up.
