117 Additional Santa Clarita Valley Coronavirus Cases Reported, 1,469 New L.A. County Cases

117 additional coronavirus cases have been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 1,469 new cases reported across Los Angeles County Thursday afternoon.

The total number of cases confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley now stands at 1,849 while the L.A. County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 59,650  as of Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH)

Public Health officials noted case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend.

As of Thursday afternoon, a total of 1,849 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 807 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 36 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 930 in Castaic*
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 34 in Stevenson Ranch
  • Nine in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 28 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall

*As of Tuesday, June 2, officials had recorded 891 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 60 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 9 cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 11 in Action.

The Department of Public Health has redistributed cases among several areas of Santa Clarita on Wednesday, causing a reduction in reported cases in Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 1,824 COVID-19 tests, with 227 positive, 1,810 negative and 17 pending, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Some patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

While eight patients are currently being treated a total of 84 total patients have recovered and been released since the pandemic began earlier this year.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

The site is temporarily closed due to the Los Angeles County curfew.

Case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend, however, the new case rate may also be slowing due to the closure of testing sites as well as the county-wide curfew due to protests which has limited availability of COVID-19 testing.

Over 659,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about eight percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

44 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,531 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. I am not against people expressing their First Amendment Rights but I sure hope the Covid19 stays in check instead of increasing because so many protesters are so close together.
This is a issue all over not just SCV.

  2. If you are combining covid cases at the prison with covid cases in CASTAIC, the least you can do is get the math right. Prison cases of 891 + 60 ≠ 930 total in CASTAIC. This isn’t rocket science.
