12 new cases of Santa Clarita coronavirus cases were announced Monday, with a cumulative total of over 730 COVID-19 cases confirmed across the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March.

As of Monday afternoon, a total of 733 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley. These include:

  • 496 in the City of Santa Clarita
  • 172 in Castaic*
  • 23 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 28 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Six in the unincorporated areas of Valencia

Included in the Castaic numbers are inmates at the Pitchess Detention Center, according to the Department of Public Health.

No new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the unincorporated areas of Newhall as of Monday afternoon.

Additionally, eight cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in nearby Acton, as well as three in nearby Agua Dulce. These numbers have remained largely stable over the last several weeks, with one additional case in Agua Dulce being identified Monday.

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has administered over 890 tests for COVID-19, 165 of which have returned positive, while 819 have come back negative and 30 remain pending, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

While 17 COVID-19 patients are currently in the hospital as of Friday, a total of 55 have recovered and been discharged, Moody added.

The patients are being treated on a designated floor of the newly-built patient tower, with each patient receiving the correct level of care without using beds in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the hospital.

An update on Henry Mayo numbers is expected to be provided once a week due to a stabilization in cases, according to the spokesperson.

Public health officials are not releasing death or recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.

The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least until June, according to County officials.

Residents are encouraged to stay at home, according to the county public health order.

Ed. Note: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has included the cases for Pitchess Detention Center and the North County Correctional Facility in the count for Castaic. KHTS is working on getting the exact numbers for those two facilities, and will update the above numbers to reflect that later this afternoon.

  1. So why not brake out the separate numbers for Castaic the Community and Pitchess Honor Ranch?

  2. The truth is, people are now YA-WHOOOOOOOING it all over the place, the moment a light lifting of a restriction was given.

Within a matter of a week, I’ve seen only one third to one half of people the people here in SCV ditching a mask. SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE AS A MASK…newsflash: a mask does not take away your freedom. Getting sick, however, will.

With the exception of me and my husband, some of my family members are gathering together and having BBQs….no masks, not even a social distance of 6 ft, as small children are running around (small children=the world’s cutest, little agar plates on two legs).

‘Freedom’ protests going on locally…NO masks. Instead they’re holding cute sans-comic-font handmade signs.

Seriously people, what did you think was going to happen when you jump the gun and part like it’s 2019 ?

  3. The number testing positive, or getting sick is not what’s important. The number of dead is what’s important. If the number of people getting sick increases…I don’t care. So you are out of commission for 2 weeks. Report a number of positive tests once a week and I’ll say “Oh, Isn’t that interesting”, but I won’t think anything more should be done about it. The number of dead however is a different story. If that number increases to a significant percentage then we have to back off on relaxing our social distancing. I suspect though that if more people start getting sick, they’ll be staying home with their sick relatives….which is essentially social distancing to the extreme.

    • Craig P, what would be a ‘significant’ percentage? How many more cases would be enough for people to stop and look at this virus with difference lenses?
