125 Additional Coronavirus Cases Reported In Santa Clarita Valley, 1,225 In L.A. County

An additional 1,225 cases of coronavirus have been identified in Los Angeles County, with 125 new cases in the Santa Clarita Valley Tuesday, officials said.

Following weeks of unrest across the country and county, the L.A. County Department of Public Health is advising anyone who attended a protest to self-quarantine for two weeks.

“Did you attend a protest recently? L.A. Public Health advises to self-quarantine for two weeks and monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19,” the County of Los Angeles posted on Facebook with a link to instructions on how to properly self-quarantine

An additional 1,225 COVID-19 cases were reported Tuesday across Los Angeles County. The County total now stands at 65,822 according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Over 720,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about 8 percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

However, she noted last week that 86 percent of people who tested positive were asymptomatic, underlining the need for social distancing and other measures in order to prevent spread to others.

“People who are positive can spread the virus fairly easily to others, even if they don’t have any symptoms,” Ferrer said. “Take care of each other by always wearing your face covering and keeping your distance when around others not in your household.”

6,998 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 11 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 1,453 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

56 new deaths were reported Tuesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,707 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

About 93 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 2,326 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 847 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 36 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,305 in Castaic*
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 37 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 11 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 84 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon

*As of Monday, June 8, officials had recorded 1,306 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 449 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 13 cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 10 in Acton.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.

The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least until June, according to County officials.

Residents are encouraged to stay at home, according to the county public health order.
