1,634 Additional Los Angeles County Coronavirus Cases Confirmed

1,634 additional coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County confirmed on Monday, with a backlog in case reporting still occurring in the County, officials said.

The L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases now stands at 193,788 as of Monday, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

“We’re at the start of the new week, a new month and we’re cautiously optimistic that we’re getting back on track to slowing the spread of COVID-19. I want to emphasize the word cautiously,” said Ferrer.

Cases reported at the beginning of the week are lower due to a backlog in testing from over the weekend, according to public health officials.

There are more than 1,784 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, Ferrer said.

30 percent of those currently hospitalized are in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to Ferrer.

Testing results are available for over 1,800,000 individuals as of Monday, with 10 percent of all people testing positive, according to public health officials.

“Slowing the spread also allows us to accomplish the next set of critical goals, which is getting more people back to work and reopening schools for in-classroom instruction. Both require that our community transmission rates drop for schools to reopen,” said Ferrer. “We need to get off the state monitoring list. And that means we need to make sure that our case rate is below 100 cases per 100,000 people.”

12 additional deaths have been reported Monday, for a total of 4,701 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County. Ferrer stated that this low number is likely due to a weekend backlog.

92 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

As of Sunday, a total of 4,366 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. These include:

  • 2,201 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 82 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,858 in Castaic*
  • 14 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 120 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 35 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 44 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Five in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Five in unincorporated Sand Canyon

*As of Sunday, August 2, officials had recorded 1,321 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 495 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals by the LADPH.

Additionally, 45 cumulative cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 20 in Agua Dulce.

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Sunday, August 2, less than half (approximately 41.6 percent) of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Thursday, July 30, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 5,317 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 657 have tested positive, and 176 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

The 19th and 20th COVID-19 related death was reported by the hospital Saturday. There are 18 patients in the hospital as of Saturday, while 191 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.
