1,949 Additional Coronavirus Cases Confirmed In L.A. County, Labs Report Delay In Test Results

32 new Santa Clarita coronavirus cases have been confirmed Friday, with an additional 1,949 cases being confirmed within Los Angeles County, officials said.

The lower number of cases are due to, in part, due to lab result reporting delays in the state electronic lab system. The number of cases is expected to increase in the coming days once the data becomes available, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The Santa Clarita Valley total is now 4,033 and the L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases stands at 168,757 as of Friday, said LADPH officials.

A total of 1,928 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, according to the LADPH. The hospitalization data is incomplete due to changes in reporting requirements from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This resulted in historical data from 11 non-reporting hospitals not being part of today’s update, according to LADPH officials.

Testing results are available for over 1,605,000 individuals as of Friday, with a daily positivity rate of 10 percent, according to public health officials.

44 additional deaths have been reported within the County Friday, for a total of 4,300 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County.

“Even with incomplete case and hospitalization data, we are seeing too much community spread of this virus, which means many of our friends, family and neighbors are sick and suffering,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. “As we head into the weekend, I hope we each understand that continuing our recovery journey, including re-opening schools and businesses, is only possible if we get back to slowing the spread. Wear a face covering, don’t gather with people you don’t live with and stay home as much as possible. The health of our community truly is a collective effort.”

As of Friday, a total of 4,036 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. These include:

  • 1,928 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 71 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,846 in Castaic*
  • 12 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 100 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 31 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 39 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Three in unincorporated Sand Canyon

*As of Thursday, July 23, officials had recorded 1,321 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 495 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 40 cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as 17 in Agua Dulce.

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Thursday, July 23, less than half (approximately 45.4 percent) of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Wednesday, July 22, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 4,931 COVID-19 tests. Of those,574 have tested positive, and 302 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are 25 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, while 159 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. The Democrats are in heaven with the coronavirus. It is political to them, and it is helping Joe Biden’s campaign. Here is proof of that.

  2. The only people that are “in heaven” are the ones who have died. People are suffering from all parties. We need to come together, not rip each other apart. Do you remember 9-11? Our community became closer, and our president at the time promoted that mentality.
