20 Additional Coronavirus Cases Reported In Santa Clarita Valley, 1,843 New In L.A. County

20 additional coronavirus cases have been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 1,843 new cases reported across Los Angeles County Tuesday afternoon.

The total number of Santa Clarita Valley cases number 1,113, while the L.A. County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 47,822, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

Ferrer noted case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend.

Over 514,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about eight percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

6,195 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 13 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 1,443 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

27 new deaths were reported Tuesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,143 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 1,093 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

    • 690 in the City of Santa Clarita
    • 36 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
    • 321 in Castaic*
      • As of Tuesday, May 26, this included 252 cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 48 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.
    • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
    • 33 in Stevenson Ranch
    • Seven in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
    • 21 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
    • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall

This story has been updated to reflect the latest available numbers from Pitchess Detention Center and the North County Correctional Facility, which each experienced an increase of one case compared to yesterday.

  1. INTERESTING how we see a large, prolonged spike in cases the week they implemented the first phase of restriction lifts (implemented May 6).

But perhaps I am the only one seeing this correlation?

  2. Spot on; wait until 3-4 weeks after the long holiday weekend when symptoms become more apparent and an even more noticeable spike occurs. As is, there is an increase of infections in 17 states, including here in Southern CA. One could not miss the pictures on TV, in newspapers or on social media of large crowds congregating, not social distancing and not wearing masks. In fact, a hair stylist in Missouri went to work sick for six days and exposed 91 clients and co-workers to the corona virus. But sure, open everything up while the virus is NOT contained, testing is still insufficient, contact tracing is virtually non-existent and a vaccine by the fall is just a possibility. By tomorrow, there will be 100,000 dead Americans; that isn’t just a number; they had names, lives, families, loved ones and they are gone forever in less than four months. Inexcusable, unacceptable and will not be forgotten come November.

    • Just stay inside for the rest of your life if you’re so afraid! Every year we have similar death rates from the flu and have for a long time. Maybe you should turn off the news. They get better ratings when they instill fear in their viewers who then sit at home and watch their fake news. Wake up people!!

      • Wrong only 130 people died of the flu last year in LA county this year we are over 2000 dead so far from this flu in LA county. This a pretty big difference.

    • Yes we won’t forget how CDC screwed us all by not recommending everyone at work and in public places get some sort of face covering on ASAP before this thing spread. They say now it will stop the spread by 75% so they could have saved 75%of the dead if it was the number one recommendation “thanks experts”

  3. To all the people living in fear and afraid to live please stay home and hide forever. The world is much better without the negative vibe. Please read the positive article above and you will see we are in great shape. Oh wait your too afraid to think positive.

  4. Chris K, you apparently haven’t yet had a close friend or family member get this terrible illness. Is that why you don’t understand that this is real?

    • Anne, actually two in my family had the virus and now they are fine. As I said before, stay inside if you’re afraid! My freedom doesn’t end where your fear begins!

      • Your freedom does not come at the expense of other’s health and the public’s safety. It would be simple if this was a case of fear, but it is not. This is a highly contagious infectious virus that has been fatal to children, young adults, middle age and seniors. This virus has no known immunity, no vaccine and has been transferred human to human worldwide. Those fortunate to recover have also reported ongoing cardiac related problems, many have suffered irreparable kidney damage, neurological and psychological effects, and respiratory problems, etc., So yes, this is scary, but it’s NOT fear that keeps me wearing a mask, or practicing social distancing; it is common sense, reliance on science/medical experts and data as well as respect for myself and others. Also, stop blaming the news for spreading fear; it is the job of a free press to keep us informed, they are not the enemy. Choose your sources carefully, due your own due diligence and by all means, ignore the buffoon currently occupying the White House.
The death of 100,000 Americans thus far is an outrage, this is where our collective grief and anger should be focused; re-opening the country too soon will inevitably lead to more needless deaths. This is what frightens me and the callous disregard for human life.

        • Well said. 101,529 deaths and counting. We are approaching death count sustained over the course of four years during World War I. These are REAL people who suffered and lost lives, impacting scores of loved ones. We can agree to disagree on our rights over our vulnerable. It is disappointing to witness the public shaming, bigotry and threats happening in a country founded on the principle of all men are created equal.

  5. 98% of all active confirmed cases in the world right now are either mild symptoms or asymptomatic! Fact.

    Oh, this terrible illness!

  6. There is no debate here. It’s a horrible virus. The Richards out there will eventually come to understand.

  7. 660+ million spent on building field hospitals…..none of them used!!!

Fear tactic and you all fell for it. Waste of tax payer money. Project room key another joke!!

    Wake up people.

  8. Thankfully some of those field hospitals weren’t needed like they expected. Be glad, and remember that this is not over.
