2,129 Additional Coronavirus Cases In L.A. County, 34 Additional Deaths

An additional 2,129 Los Angeles County coronavirus cases and 34 additional deaths were confirmed Wednesday, officials said.

Dr. Barbra Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health noted that this large increase is partially due to a backlog of around 600 cases reported by one laboratory.

The County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 77,189 according to Ferrer.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis acknowledged continuing protests against police brutality and racial inequality Wednesday.

“I know this uprising will be sustained and translate into many reforms and I want to thank the thousands of young people and so many others across the country for leading this protest,” said Solis. “From what I’ve seen the vast majority of protesters are wearing face covering but please keep a physical distance when you’re out and about.”

Solis also encouraged residents to complete the U.S. Census in order to ensure that the County would have the funding and emergency resources available for the next decade.

Over 853,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about 8 percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

However, she noted previously that 86 percent of people who tested positive were asymptomatic, underlining the need for social distancing and other measures in order to prevent spread to others.

Approximately 10 percent of all people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, of those, 1,420 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

34 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,991 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

“Our hearts go out to the many people who have lost folks that they love to covid-19,” said Ferrer. “You’re in our thoughts and our prayers every day, and we’re so sorry for your loss.”

Ferrer noted that the number of cases and deaths reported midweek tend to be higher due to testing backlogs from the weekend.

About 93 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

The percentage has stayed “consistent” through the pandemic, according to Public Health officials.
