21st Santa Clarita Coronavirus Death, 76 Additional SCV Cases Reported

The 21st Santa Clarita coronavirus death has been reported with 76 additional coronavirus cases confirmed in Santa Clarita Valley, officials said Wednesday.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has confirmed an additional death for a COVID-19 patient, bringing the hospital total to 11 deaths and at least 10 additional coronavirus deaths in SCV nor occurring at Henry Mayo, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Due to patient privacy laws, the age and any information regarding underlying health conditions about the patient are unable to be released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 1,732 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 801 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 34 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 821 in Castaic*
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 34 in Stevenson Ranch
  • Nine in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 28 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall

*As of Tuesday, June 2, officials had recorded 891 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 60 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, nine cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 11 in Action.

The Department of Public Health has redistributed cases among several areas of Santa Clarita on Wednesday, causing a reduction in reported cases in Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 1,824 COVID-19 tests, with 227 positive, 1,810 negative and 17 pending, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Some patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

While eight patients are currently being treated a total of 84 total patients have recovered and been released since the pandemic began earlier this year.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

The site is temporarily closed due to the Los Angeles County curfew.

The L.A. County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 58,234 as of Wednesday, according to Public Health.

“L.A. County has suffered a great deal of loss from COVID-19. As a community, we are mourning with the families and friends who have passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with you every day,” said Barbara Director of Public Health. “Because the incubation period for COVID-19 is 14 days, if you think you’ve had a possible exposure to the virus because you’ve been in close proximity for 15 minutes or more with others who are not wearing face-coverings, please consider remaining away from all others for 14 days. If you have been exposed and have people in your home who are at greater risk of having serious illness from the virus because they are older or have underlying health conditions, it is very important to take all precautions to not expose vulnerable people. This includes staying at least 6 feet away and wearing a cloth face covering, even in your residence. If during the 14 days, you develop symptoms, please call your healthcare provider and consider testing. ”

Case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend, however, the new case rate may also be slowing due to the closure of testing sites as well as the county-wide curfew due to protests which has limited availability of COVID-19 testing.

Over 646,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about eight percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

46 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 1,155 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. “Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.”

Did this article mean to say “…which official say could be much HIGHER than the actual number…” rather than ‘lower’?

Or do they that, mean because people may have retested as positive, the overall numbers of individual cases could be lower b/c of this? I’m thinking so but it sounds squirrely the way its written….at least to me.

  2. What?! There’s a pandemic going on out there?! Who knew! I thought the only thing going on is these protests!
On the serious side, all these people in close proximity acting like they don’t have to socially distance themselves along with everyone wanting to open everything up before things are under control are in for a rude awakening when the virus kicks in again and gets worse than ever! I sure don’t want this to happen, but hey, if you don’t use your head, you’re gonna suffer badly!
