Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) officials announced Friday that approximately 30% of people between the ages of 16-49 in L.A. County have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As of Friday, approximately 30% of the persons in the newly eligible group of people between 16-49 years of age, around 4,949,863 people, have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, health officials said.

According to LADPH Health Science Officer Dr. Paul Simon, 5,383,597 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to people across Los Angeles County. Of those vaccinated, 1,913,967 people received second doses.

Starting Thursday, April 15, anyone living or working in L.A. County 16 and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccine and are able to schedule vaccination appointments on the MyTurn website.

Youth ages 16 and 17 can only receive the Pfizer vaccine and need to sign up at a site that offers this vaccine. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who can provide consent for vaccination.

Moving forward, only Pfizer and Moderna will be offered at L.A. County vaccination sites until the FDA and the CDC have completed their review of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and recommend that providers can begin administering Johnson & Johnson vaccine again.

“The pause on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine demonstrates that our vaccine safety program works to continuously monitor new vaccines as use becomes more widespread,” said LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer on Thursday. “We can be confident that the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, both of which have been available to the public for five months and administered to well over 150 million people across the country, are safe for us to continue to use, especially when compared to the risks of getting sick and dying from COVID-19.”

Over 600,000 vaccine doses are expected to be allocated across L.A. County next week, according to Simon. Of that, Public Health is expecting to receive approximately 362,000 vaccine doses; an increase of nearly 39,000 doses from this week. Approximately 68% of next week’s vaccine supply is expected to be for first doses and 32% for second doses. Of the 362,000 doses of vaccine the County expects to receive next week, 73% of doses are planned to go to sites located in the most vulnerable communities.

An additional 643 COVID-19 cases and 36 deaths were reported across L.A. County Friday, according to officials.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,228,114 positive cases of COVID-19 and 23,601 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the LADPH officials.

Testing results are available for over 6,272,000 people, with a cumulative 18% of people testing positive, according to officials.

As of Thursday, there were 518 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in L.A. County, with 24% in the ICU.

The Southern California Region has 33.1% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of the state’s last update on Tuesday, April 13, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

On Thursday, April 15, 2021, 20 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 26,674 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley over the past year, according to the LADPH. These cases include:

• 20,175 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+17)
• 47 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
• 836 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
• 3,709 in Castaic* (+2)
• 68 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
• 1 in Placerita Canyon
• 15 in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon
• 17 in unincorporated Sand Canyon
• 128 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
• 39 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
• 1,132 in Stevenson Ranch
• 336 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde (+1)
• 190 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia

*As of Wednesday, April 14, public health officials have recorded 1,986 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,447 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals. In nearby Acton, there have been 468 cumulative cases, as well as 277 cases in Agua Dulce.

A total of 145 coronavirus deaths have been reported at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, with at least 285 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley since March 2020.
