36 Additional Santa Clarita Valley Coronavirus Cases Reported

36 additional cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed within the Santa Clarita Valley as of Saturday afternoon, for a total of over 3,000 cumulative COVID-19 cases.

As of Saturday afternoon, a total of 3,002 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 1,078 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 43 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,777 in Castaic*
  • Five in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 55 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 13 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 27 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Three in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One  in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon

*As of Thursday, June 18, officials had recorded 1,312 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 486 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are distributed in both the Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

Additionally, 13 cases have been confirmed in nearby Agua Dulce, as well as 21 in Acton.

The Department of Public Health has redistributed cases among several areas of Santa Clarita, causing a reduction in reported cases in Canyon Country and Stevenson Ranch.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

As of Wednesday, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 2,725 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 282 have tested positive, and 50 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to the hospital.

Some patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

There are 13 patients in the hospital as of Wednesday, while 99 patients have been discharged, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

Case numbers are usually higher midweek due to a testing backlog from over the weekend, however, the new case rate may also be slowing due to the closure of testing sites.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. Until the detention center stats are separated from the community stats these updates are meaningless.

  2. Less than 1% of children are having complications of COVID. Research it people!! If you are high risk, take precautions. We’ve prolonged the inevitable, corona virus isn’t going away. It’s here to stay. Increase testing, increases results. Testing is readily available now, as before it was strict requirements to even get a test done.

Fixating on the numbers is causing fear, without separating if it’s from the inmates in jails lumped into today’s count.

  3. Not true, they are a microcosm of what is happening in our nation right now, particularly in the South, Southwest and the West. Each day Texas, Florida, Arizona and California break alarming new records of recorded cases and hospitalizations. This is NOT happening only in detention centers; people throughout Texas, Arizona and Florida cannot even get tested without waiting hours in line, hospital ICUs in Houston, TX are overwhelmed and field operations are being put into place to treat Corona virus patients. In the Imperial County here in CA, medical front liners state they have reached critical stage and Gov Newsom has reinstated the stay-at-home order. Also, Gov Newsom just announced bar closures for LA and six other counties and recommending the same for 8 other counties just moments ago due to the virus spread.

Wake up; we are in crisis. This virus will continue to spread as long as people continue to deny its very existence. Welcome to our new normal; until we all get on board and seriously address this public health crisis no one is safe and no one will be spared.

  4. Perfectly explained. Thank you.

  5. Incentives for each COVID test. Kick backs and extra money for doctors and hospitals. Closing of testing sites for no apparent reason and reopening, therefore creating a surge in numbers. I’m a nurse, I see a disgusting game being played and innocent people are living in fear. Wake up people!!!!

  6. The surge in numbers is because there are more positive test results. We should fear this. Of all people, you should know this. Are you a nurse who is working in a hospital ER or ICU? Do you realize that the U.S. alone has 25 % of the world’s cases?
Share with us some facts, please don’t spread rumors.

  7. Corona virus will not go away as long as the democratic party won’t stop this protest. It is desgusting and is time for the news and people to speak up. The Corona virus is being spread by this protest.
