799 Coronavirus COVID-19 Cases Reported In L.A. County, Three Additional Deaths

A total of 799 coronavirus, COVID-19, cases have been confirmed in Los Angeles County as of Wednesday, officials said.

Three additional deaths have been reported in Los Angeles County, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the L.A. County director of public health.

The additional deaths reported are individuals over the age of 65 with underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer.

There have been 266 new confirmed coronavirus, COVID-19, cases in the past 48 hours alone, according to public health officials.

Over 6,300 people have been tested in Los Angeles County as of Tuesday, with 11 percent of people testing positive for the coronavirus.

“Today, social distancing remains a critically important strategy for slowing down the spread of  COVID-19,” Ferrer said.

Wednesday, the L.A. County health officer is issuing an order that requires a 14-day self-isolation of any person who tests positive for COVID-19, or is presumed by their physician or clinician to be positive for COVID-19, and also orders the quarantine for all close contacts, including household members and caregivers, according to Ferrer.

The current fatality rate for COVID-19 has been tracked at about 1 percent, which is higher than the annual influenza fatality rate, Ferrer said.

The county is also working on plans to assign additional medical sheltering sites, providing transportation, food, laundry services and security services. The goal is to secure at least 2,000 beds for quarantine/isolation of COVID-19-positive or COVID-19-suspected individuals, according to county officials.

Officials are no longer including the death of the young person who had previously been announced as a COVID-19-related death in the county total, because the CDC has been asked to investigate that case, according to Ferrer.

Tuesday’s announcement brought with it the news of the first minor to die in the United States, an individual under the age of 18 in Lancaster, although LACDPH later noted that the case was under further investigation.

The minor has been revealed to be a 17-year-old boy who died at Antelope Valley Hospital of septic shock, which is considered to be related to his response to COVID-19, according to Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris.

Governor Newsom has approved allocating more than $42 million for the Los Angeles region in emergency homeless housing assistance and prevention, which includes $10.6 million for Los Angeles County, according to county leaders.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Clarita coronavirus case breakdown was 15 total cases. The county report lists two cases in Castaic, two cases in Stevenson Ranch, 10 cases in the city of Santa Clarita and one case in Canyon Country.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  •  Avoid close contact with people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
