9,420 Coronavirus Cases Confirmed In L.A. County, Lowest Number Of New Cases Since March

A total of 9,420 coronavirus, COVID-19, cases have been confirmed in Los Angeles County, officials said Monday.

There have been 239 new cases confirmed Monday, the lowest number of new coronavirus cases since March 26, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Ferrer noted new cases reported on Mondays are usually lower due to limited testing over the weekend, but said the growth of cases has slowed.

“While we’re facing the battles now, remember it is only temporary. There really is a light at the end of the tunnel in our ongoing effort to combat this crisis,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

The current “Safer at Home” health order has been extended until May 15, as the County continues efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus, according to the DPH.

“We have in fact seen what we now could confirm is, in fact, the flattening of the curve in a way that’s actually saving lives and allowing us to have a chance at making sure that our healthcare system remains able to serve all who need care,” Ferrer said.

Face coverings are now required across the county, including in Santa Clarita, in efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19, according to the director of public health.

The cloth coverings are required for both employees and the public upon entering essential businesses, Ferrer said.

This new addition to the order is set to go into effect Wednesday, April 15, at midnight, according to Ferrer.

Approximately 52,000 tests have been conducted so far as of Monday. Of those tested, 13 percent have been positive for COVID-19, according to public health officials.

“Almost all” of the case backlog has been processed across the county, with testing limited to those who are symptomatic, according to Ferrer.

Testing capacity is continuing to increase countywide, Ferrer said, with additional coronavirus testing sites created, including one in Santa Clarita.

A total of 25 deaths have been reported Monday, 11 of which are individuals over the age of 65, all with health conditions, bringing the county total to 320, according to Ferrer.

The mortality rate slightly rose to 3.4 percent, according to the public health director.

As of Sunday afternoon, there are 143 confirmed cases in the city of Santa Clarita, nine in Castaic, 11 in Stevenson Ranch and 14 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Additionally, five cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton as of Sunday, according to officials.

The numbers for the unincorporated portions of Valencia, Saugus and Bouquet Canyon, as well as nearby Agua Dulce, have been “suppressed,” meaning there are between one and four confirmed cases for each community, according to public health officials.

This is done to protect patient privacy. Once these locations have five or more confirmed cases, the numbers are expected to be included, according to a public health spokesperson.

The next update on the number of cases in the Santa Clarita Valley is expected Monday afternoon.
