Barbershops, Hair Salons Able To Reopen For Majority Of California, Not Including L.A. County

Barbershops and hair salons are able to reopen for the majority of the California starting Tuesday, not including Los Angeles County, although Governor Gavin Newsom noted the state might allow certain areas of L.A. County to reopen.

In 47 of 58 counties in California, Newsom has allowed barbershops and hair salons to reopen on Tuesday, May 26 with additional guidelines in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Nail salons can open a bit later, as their reopenings are a bit more complicated, Newsom said.

Los Angeles County is not included in those 47 local governments, but other Southern California counties, including Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernadino are on the list.

However, Newsom discussed the proposal from L.A. County to allow a regional approach to reopening, noting there is a large “geographic disparity” in the county, with lower rates of spread in some areas.

“We have been working with L.A. County officials,” Newsom said. “We have had those conversations specifically about the County of L.A. and the size and scope.. it is as large as many states.”

Newsom noted those conversations are still ongoing, with further details to be released in the coming days.

Under the guidelines for barbershops, employers are required to provide temperature and/or symptom screenings for all workers at the beginning of their shift and any vendors, contractors or other workers entering the establishment.

Workers and customers who are sick or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 are encouraged to stay home.

Customers should be screened upon arrival. Be prepared to cancel or reschedule customers who indicate they have any signs of illness, according to the guidelines.

Hair salon or barbershop operators should provide and ensure workers use all required protective equipment, including masks, eye protection and gloves when these items are required for their job duties, according to the state.

Workers and customers must use face coverings during haircutting and other close contact hair services. Customers are encouraged to wear face coverings with earloops, where possible, to ensure the face-covering does not interfere with the hair service. Facilities should provide clean face coverings for staff and customers, according to the guidance.

“Keeping the hair salon or barbershop clean is everyone’s responsibility,” the guidance reads.
“Coordinate with coworkers, fellow tenants, booth renters and/or staff and put a plan in place for cleaning at the beginning and end of each shift and in between customers.”

Owners should implement measures to ensure physical distancing of at least six feet between and among workers and customers, except when providing haircutting and other close contact services, according to the state.

  1. I am in total agreement with you Governor. I live with a chronic disease (R.A.) my son, lives with a chronic disease (M.S.), I totally feel safer at thome. I am a COunty Worker and the cubicles that we are to interview our GAN Participants do not allow for the 6 feet distancing. Long before COVID-19 broke out, I practiced the use of wiping pens, desk area, and spraying Lysol on the desk-top and the chairs the Participants sit in, of course, always providing tissues for the Participants/Customers too. Even with this, during flu season I was exposed to germs from coughs and many times got sick enough to have excruciating painful and disabling flair ups keeping me from being able to report to work for a couple of days. This pandemic is a scary thing and I opted to self quarantine as of March 16th; per your advise. Auto-Immune deficiencies are no joke and I am grateful for your call. I am blessed to have the opportunity to work from home as I love my job ans appreciate that I am able to continue as a Public Servant. Being in the category of what is otherwise known as blind disability (unless we disclose or share with others, people don’t know), is a huge disadvantage. Once again, I truly appreciate your greatest efforts in keeping the public safe and all others at minimal risk. Safer at home is the only way to beat this pandemic.

I am sorry that you and your family have health issues. I have no problem with you and your family staying home but have a real problem with your health issues so seriously affecting the rest of us. I am a senior in the vulnerable group and it is my responsibility to keep myself safe, not the responsibility of innocent folks who are losing their livelihoods, educations, etc., by being forced to stay at home. We were asked to stay home for 14 days and lower the curve so that medical facilities would not be overwhelmed. Newsome keeps extending the confinement even though that mission has been accomplished. Stop holding the rest of us hostage because you are afraid. We must be free to live our lives, open our businesses and go about moving our country forward again. Governor Newsome is a tyrant, we the people will not stand for this for much longer.

  2. When we elect a dip$hit as our governor, who has NEVER held a REAL job in his life, this should be expected.

  3. Why is L.A. County not able to reopen? is it because Gruesome Newsom has a hard on for us?

  4. It’s all about the money. And the state is making money by keeping the schools shut down. Nothing makes the schools more money than when every kid has perfect attendance. They make even more if they have perfect attendance but dont have to actually care for the kids. To bad the schools won’t get the windfall. Newsom will find a way to put it to waste. Its fraud and he should be arrested. None of this lockdown is based on fact or data.

  5. You are very confused. But it’s ok, you aren’t in charge. Not sure why you are so suspicious, though. The students who “disappeared” and haven’t responded to their schools have
been taken off the attendance records so there is no money coming for them. The number of attendance days is 122 instead of the usual 180, so 58 days less $ for EVERY student. As for the caring of the kids, you realize that teachers are WORKING daily and being paid, right? Why in the heck can’t you have some faith! Jail? For what?

  6. This is stupid. You all go to the store touching everything everyone else touches, same with Lowes, Home Depot, you go to work and touch door knobs, and probably push the door itself with your hand, you sit at the park on the grass or a bench you pick up your dog mess but first you got to grab a doggie bag but somebody grab to many and shoved them back in the dispenser, When will the healthy paranoid realize that you are touching feeling breathing stepping on rubbing against something everyday that someone else touched and after several months of this you aint sick..you don’t wear a mask at your house nor does your neighbor while talking with them, and bam all of a sudden your neighbor sneezed, do you say bless you or you run in the house and grab a thermometer, you say, bless you and continue talking. This town has more people with out mask than with.. so stop acting like you are a scientist and stop believing Nancy Piglosi’s little boy, he has 0 knowledge. this state is so far from being repaired. this state needs to open or its going to continue to be sued by many organization.. I.m sorry for you Sylvia and your son stay safe

  7. Touching dry things ( paper, plastic, etc) is not the same as droplets from a person’s mouth entering your mouth or eyes. Common sense, not politics. Masks ARE being worn all over this valley.
