Los Angeles County Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn are set to submit a motion that will ask the state of California to grant regional variances within the county during their board meeting Tuesday.
Barger announced her and Hahn’s planned action during a webinar meeting hosted jointly by the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation and the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“We are ready to reopen,” Barger said during the webinar. “The numbers in the region really don’t show that there is a significant risk to reopen safely. The data reveals that the risk of reopening is lower than originally thought.”
The proposed motion, if passed and allowed by the state, would allow Santa Clarita and other regions within Los Angeles County to accelerate their reopening process if it was safe to do.
“Post-COVID-19 is not going to look like what it did prior,” Barger said. “But I know our communities are educated about how to do social distancing, the need to wear a mask, the need to recognize that the virus is still out there. If we practice and protect ourselves, we can continue to keep the curve flat.”
If the motion is passed, the County’s Public Health Officer will reportedly work with the State to seek approval on behalf of qualified cities and regions.
“This is a prime example of the excellent partnership we have with our Fifth District Supervisor,” said Santa Clarita City Councilmember Bob Kellar. “Even during this time of uncertainty, a time when she has so much on her plate, she has been there for the Santa Clarita community and continues to support the goals and initiatives specific to our residents.”

The City of Santa Clarita has reached out to local state representatives to help support the cause. State Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, has since endorsed the expected motion, thanking Barger for her “leadership and support for our local communities.”
“She understands that one size does not fit all when it comes to the impact of COVID-19,” Wilk said in a statement released Friday. “It makes sense economically for the County to facilitate the opening of cities less impacted by the virus as long as the reopening follows the guidelines laid out by the governor to be safe and responsible. Local governments should be able to determine when it is time to move from safer at home, to safer at work.”
The announcement comes exactly one week after Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth sent a letter to Barger that expressed the Santa Clarita City Council’s formal opposition to the extension of the “Safer at Home” order.
“We are so fortunate to have Supervisor Barger representing our community of Santa Clarita,” said Mayor Cameron Smyth. “She has always been an ally we can depend on and, during the COVID pandemic, she has been a steadfast partner and strong advocate, for not only our City, but our entire North County Coalition.”

I don’t trust these folks for what ever reason, Gee, if only I could hear what Newsom thinks….I’ve heard from so many others on these threads that hes the best
I don’t know about the best but but he was the only one with the brains to tell everyone to get a mask on in public and at work
Will, I was being sarcastic, most of his administration is/continues to bankrupt this state for a number of reasons that some are willing to overlook.
Dr. Ferrer making these decisions for LA County Health Department who is not even a medical doctor seems to be a matter of issue, don’t forget, just “eight” days ago
On May 14, Dr. Ferrer announced an extension of the “Safer at Home” order, noting it could be several more months, what changed? could it be that yesterday,
Dr. Deborah Birx, a key member of the Coronavirus Task Force said she has asked the CDC to” investigate” the L.A. area to determine why cases are still on the rise even though it has been shut down for two months, which was followed up later that day by Dr. Anthony Fauci warning that the Stay-home orders that extend too long could cause the U.S. “irreparable damage,” huh,
