Bars, Gyms, Sports Allowed To Reopen Next Week In California With Modifications

Bars, gyms, schools, day camps and some sports are expected to be allowed to reopen in California with modifications starting next week as soon as June 15, officials said.

California is moving into Phase 3 of the reopening of the state after allowing hair salons, barbershops and dine-in restaurants to reopen in May.

Mark Ghaly, secretary of the Health and Human Services Agency, said the state plans to release guidance Friday for counties to follow for businesses to reopen after being closed since mid-March because of concerns about spreading COVID-19.

The guidance is also expected to include the music, film and television industries as well as day camps, campgrounds zoos, hotels and tribal casinos. Guidelines for professional sporting events without audiences are also included, according to the state.

Only counties that have met certain thresholds on the number of cases, testing and preparedness will be allowed to start reopening the other sectors. It is not clear as of Friday if Los Angeles County meets that criteria.

“When we put out guidelines in every sector, we put out a document that is a ‘how’ document but does not prescribe ‘when’ these counties move forward. That will be on the basis of counties making that determination for themselves based upon the unique conditions in their respective communities,” Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday.

Nail salons are still expected to remain closed, according to state officials.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger sent a letter to Newsom Thursday requesting the reopening of schools and day camps before the summer season starts.

“I know as a parent yourself, you grasp the critical link between supporting public health and supporting our students,” Barger wrote in the letter. “As parents return to work we must act urgently to ensure they have the requisite support needed for their children.”
