Carl Goldman Celebrates First Day Home After Coronavirus Quarantine: Part 32

Carl Goldman is celebrating his first day home in Santa Clarita after spending weeks in a coronavirus quarantine.

Back In The States Without The Coronavirus – Day 41 (Monday)

Karma hit me. I woke up at 3 a.m. after sleeping in my own bed for the first time in 60 days. My body was still on Nebraska time. As I walked down the hall, I noticed one of our two dogs had left a deposit on our carpet. I quickly deduced it was a welcome home gift from BeeBee.

It had been pouring rain outside last night. When Jeri let our two dogs, Cadet and BeeBee, outside for a final pit stop, BeeBee must have given her fake pooping action, wanting nothing to do with the downpour.

I figured BeeBee just wanted to give me an extra thrill. For the first time in two months, I cleaned up her poop. It felt good to be home. Good to sleep next to my wife, with our dogs at our feet.

But 3 a.m. was way too early to share a poop picture, an act I believe our news staff appreciated.

My day was spent communicating with friends and family, conducting interviews with the media and working remotely from our house. A concept no longer unique in our ever-changing world. My wife, who never had the novel corona virus, COVID-19, was going into work at our radio station, KHTS FM-98.1 & AM-1220, each day. I planned to stay home a minimum of another 14 days. We’ll see what our world looks like two weeks from now.

It’s strange to say, I miss my medical angels in Nebraska. We had become family, even though I didn’t recognize them outside their hazmat suits.

I avoided the stacked-up mail. Dreading income tax time, I put that task off until the weekend.

Jill Phillips Cox, the owner of Jill’s Cake Creations, delivered a double-decker cake to our radio station in honor of my return to Santa Clarita. Of course, our staff ate it. Jeri saved the top. It was delicious. The top should last me throughout the week, only if I can avoid the urge to binge.

A woman named Kathleen Day mailed me a book, “100 Things To Do In Omaha Before You Die.” Since I lived through my coronavirus, COVID-19, ordeal I began reading.

The first chapter dealt with, you guessed it, the Nebraska delicacy, Runza. I also learned Omaha was the birthplace of the Rueben sandwich. I was already hungry, and I hadn’t yet made it through the first five pages of the book. I put it on my shelf, promising to take it with me when we travel back to Omaha.

Kathleen also shared in a letter to me accompanying the book, “GBR” in Nebraska means “Go Big Red.” I now have the correct code letters to navigate through any challenges during a future visit to Nebraska. In Los Angeles, “GBR” might be gang slang for “Got Busted Regularly,” so I’ll have to use the line sparingly until I return to Omaha.

Readers asked why no throat tests were given on my last few tests at Nebraska Medicine. We have been on the front lines as researchers, scientists and doctors go up the COVID-19 learning curve. They were finding the two swabs deep up each nostril for five seconds was more accurate.

Figures, the nostril samples are much more uncomfortable. However, it’s all relative because my voluntary clinical study of swabs under my eyelids and deep up my butt were no picnic either.

Many people have suggested no more cruises for us. Just the opposite is true. Jeri and I have taken eight or nine Princess Cruises vacations over the years. We love being able to slow down from our hectic lives, unpack our bags only one time and explore exotic places at each port. As soon as travel becomes advisable, we’ll be booking another Princess cruise.  I believe our friends, Mark and Jerri Jorgensen, feel the same way. We have many more destinations to explore.

Tom O’Kane posted a question on our KHTS Radio Facebook page: ”Does his blood platelets carry the antibodies that could be used to defend against coronavirus?”

That’s what researchers are currently studying. It’s one of the reasons I took many blood tests for my clinical study. Along with giving researchers a better understanding of how and if the virus travels through the bloodstream. As I’ve said in earlier postings, if my samples can provide a few clues, the effort was well worth it.

I understand so many people have legitimate questions and concerns. I will try to answer them as they are posted on our KHTS website or on our KHTS Radio Facebook page. You may comment below this post.

Jeri has been spearheading our radio station’s COVID-19 content. Along with the minute-by-minute changing information, we are providing tips for handling the quarantine. Our friends at SCVi Charter School are on our airwaves at 9 a.m. for an hour each day to share advice on working with your kids during the days ahead, making the most out of our quarantine.

Moving forward I will be posting my journal entry a few times a week while we all navigate through this crisis.

The best advice I can share as more of us are quarantined is to continue to make lemonade out of lemons. As my wife says, look at quarantine or self isolation at home as a gift. For her it’s a chance to organize old family photographs. For me it’s been learning a whole new appreciation of cleaning up dog poop and realizing, despite my 60 days away from home, I was only sick for about 10 hours. I’m one of the lucky ones. My symptoms could have been a lot worse. I’m also proud of becoming a Nebraska fan for life.

I continue to learn many lessons as I watch our nation cope with the pandemic. We all will look back at this point in history, like we have with Pearl Harbor or 9/11, knowing our lives will be forever changed.

Hopefully when we look back, we can all take away the positives as well as remain sober with the disruption of our lives and livelihood, and mourn the victims of the virus.

As I turned in for the night, I relinquished my control of the remote. I was content, knowing I could now happily join my wife in sharing a Hallmark Channel movie together.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. So happy you and Jeri are home safe. I just got back from my cruise to Australia and New Zealand. Glad to be home. Bonnie nd I followed your story. She feels as if she knows you.Keep your sense of humor. Hugs and love coming your way

  2. Are they still growing your specimen at the CDC in Atlanta?

  3. So glad you are home safe. Hugs and much love to the both of you. You are always among the first to step up for community causes, such a shame that some in the community couldn’t do the same for you.

  4. Welcome back to town, Carl. I think we all will continue to be interested in your “story”,
especially if your body has built up an immunity against this virus.
We may have to drain your blood for the bigger/better/greater good. LOL
By the way what is your blood type, A?
You have given us hope that IF we get IT we can make it through….
I want to go to the store for a few supplies and will wear my face mask with
a sign , “DON”T HAVE IT, DON”T WANT IT, STAY AWAY”
I do not understand why the continued 14-day quarantine or self isolation?
Can you get IT again? Or are you just being careful so your neighbors won’t freak-out..?
Again Thank you for telling us the truth about what happened to you and Jeri. Stay healthy…
A Fan from Old Newhall, C. Harris

  5. Welcome home Carl … I’ve been reading your posts and want to thank you for your great attitude and humor. May God bless you and Jeri and your dogs as you get back into a “normal” life.

  6. So excited you’re back home! Judging from the size of your pooch, that’s not small poop you’re having to pick up! Welcome home, looking forward to your posts. Thank you for doing what you do : )

  7. I just binge-read your last 5 entries. Up until these last few days, I was reading and marveling at them daily.
Love your sense of humor and writing style. Every journal entry was thoroughly entertaining. A selfish part of me wanted you to keep testing positive until the presidential election results come in.
Have you walked in the rain yet?
Have you slowed down and made eye contact?
Welcome home. I’m sure Omaha misses you and will never be the same since you left.

  8. I’m fascinated why your wife did not get the virus. She needs to be studied because she apparently has some sort of immunity.

  9. Lol. That lady who sent you the book wins the prize for ‘most uplifting’ …
    — the wrong title at the wrong time–

  10. As a Nebraska Medicine employee I am so happy to hear that your experience with a was a good one and that you are home and in good health. Thank you so much for your willingness to be in clinical trials and supplying us with the samples. You sound like an awesome human and I have enjoyed reading your blog. Take care, and keep up the amazing job you are doing.

  11. I want to thank you for your Coronablog. I googled for a first hand account of someone with the C and you were the only one who popped up at the time. Since that search, I bookmarked hometownstation and checked for a new post every day. Your sense of humor throughout the ordeal has kept me coming back for more. I’ll probably keep checking here long after the C has come and gone. Glad you’re back in your home and enjoying the little gifts from Beebs. Thanks, from Texas

  12. Not the Jill that sent the cake unfortunately but I do love to bake. ?? I haven’t read all your entries but will admit to using your name as a come back to friend back East that said about staying calm and it’s no big deal it’s not like you know someone that has it. I don’t think we’ve formally met but I selfishly used your name to shoot back a response that shut her right up and made her apologize. It’s sad when it takes someone to be affected personally for them to do something. Even companies . I believe in being proactive so I do believe we’re a little behind this but I’m trying not to blame anyone cuz what good would that do. It’s definitely a wake up call that I hope the 20 year olds will adhere too. Again until a parent or grandparent are affected they may continue to not care and go on spring break like nothing’s happening. I don’t wish bad things to happen to people but that can be a form of karma as well. Speaking of karma I kept waiting for what yours was. I think maybe if you had stepped in it like a Lego that would’ve really been worse. Funny how animals can get mad and that’s their way of showing it. If they only knew why you were really away. Glad you’re home and thank you for letting them test you to help us. That was very unselfish of you. Oh and I hope Princess Cruises gives you the trip of a lifetime all expenses paid and VIP. ? hint hint ?

  13. Carl, I am so glad to hear that you are finally home. I have enjoyed reading all your posts and hope you will continue writing.

  14. So very glad you are finally home! Just one question if you know…Did they take blood or any samples from Jeri your wife before she left the ship to study?

  15. Carl & Jeri: Consider getting more TV remotes for the nightstand. Some times they are like socks in the dryer or tupperware lids, they just seem to disappear into an alternate universe. Having His and Hers remotes also seems to preserve the peace in the household. Glad you both are home.

  16. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and continuing to update everyone even now that you’re home. Very relieved and happy to know that you are home with your wife and pups.

My husband, children, and I recently moved to the Valencia area of Santa Clarita and are adjusting well. Reading your account of your experience with COVID-19 puts me at ease and lessens my ever-growing anxiety. Happy to be living in the same town as someone as positive and uplifting as yourself. We are keeping the faith and envisioning the best possible outcome for our entire country, as well as the world.

Looking forward to further updates and insights!

  17. Hi
I’ve been following your blog with great interest from Cape Town , thank you for always keeping upbeat . I also had Guillain Barre so, along with many others (I reposted on GBS Facebook pages) have been following your journey with great interest and am delighted that you’re safely home at last.
    Keep safe.

  18. This may have made its way to you already but wanted to share. It’s perfect. Hope you are continuing to regain your strength.

  19. Carl, welcome home, and how wonderful that you’re well! I found you while browsing the Internet, because of ‘Transtar.’ I was Transtar’s morning news anchor here in L.A. before the sale and move to Atlanta, and was pleased just to see Transtar mentioned — and then your posts turned out to be witty and insightful! Will be checking out KHTS, and looking forward to following your posts. I wish continued health and productive diversion to you and everyone you love (with or without tails. ?)

  20. So glad your home, I’m sure you have already heard Chris Mann has done my Corona!

  21. I have so much enjoyed following you from day one. Your humor, your strength I hope has helped others and will continue in these tough times. I’m so happy you are finally home and looking forward to cruising again, it is the best vacation.

  22. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I know that you have been studied exhaustively to see what clues you can provide to researchers. Has your wife also been studied from the perspective of why she didn’t catch the disease? Is there something she is taking or doing that makes her more resistant? Thanks again and I wish you both well.

  23. I saw your story on CNN. I am very happy to see you well and home! Take care.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
