Carl Goldman Continues To Battle Health Issues After Recovering From COVID-19: Part 38

Over the past several months, KHTS owner Carl Goldman has continued to battle issues with his personal health after recovering from COVID-19 back in March.

Before We Begin

I should start this journal by noting that I am not Carl Goldman.

My name is Michael Brown, and for the past two and half years, I’ve had the pleasure of working for Carl and his wife Jeri at KHTS.

Back in February, Carl captured the attention of the world when he began to write about his experiences aboard the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship, which was quarantined off in Japan for nearly two weeks. His first-hand account offered us all an inside perspective into what would become one of 2020’s defining moments: the COVID-19 pandemic.

As many of you probably know already, Carl would test positive for the coronavirus upon his return to the United States, causing him to be quarantined for several more weeks in the biocontainment unit at the University of Nebraska hospital. All the while, he continued to write daily, with his trademark wit and attention to detail.

He would return home in March to a state locked down due to the very virus he had defeated in Nebraska. He still likes to joke that he was the “longest quarantined American.”

After that, Carl’s writing slowed down. He would offer us personal updates on large events, such as when his interview on “60 Minutes” was aired, or when he and Jeri met with President Trump in April, but his days of writing daily were over.

Then, the journals stopped.

Many of you have asked for updates on Carl since. Due to his current condition, Carl is unable to give you that update himself. As such, Carl and Jeri asked me to write this journal entry to let everyone know how he’s been doing.

Unfortunately, I do not possess Carl’s writing wit, so I apologize for that in advance.

A Health Hiatus – Carl Goldman – Day 163 (Thursday, July 16)

After Carl returned home from Nebraska in March, he started to contend with health issues brought about by the Guillain-Barre syndrome that he had been diagnosed with before leaving for his cruise on the Diamond Princess.

For those of you who may not know, Guillain-Barre is a rare disorder in which your body’s own immune system attacks your nerves.

After running some tests, doctors diagnosed Carl with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, or CIDP.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, CIDP is a “neurological disorder characterized by progressive weakness and impaired sensory function in the legs and arms,” and is considered the “chronic counterpart” to Guillain-Barre.

I went in for treatment, and was in the hospital for almost a month,” Carl told me over the phone Thursday. “Between treatments for a week, and then the rest of it was in intensive physical rehab.”

However, Carl’s treatments did not work. He was still experiencing weakness, fatigue, and numbness. However, Carl was determined to defeat this, just as he did COVID.

I looked at a variety of avenues, met with a number of different doctors, and did a lot of reading on it,” he said.

One of those doctor’s appointments reunited Jeri and Carl with Jerri and Mark Jorgensen in Utah, the couple that the Goldmans had been quarantined with on the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship. Three of the “Four Amigos” would contract COVID-19, with only Jeri escaping unscathed.

It was eventually decided that Carl’s next step would be to begin undergoing a process known as plasmapheresis. Described by Jeri as “scrubbing the blood,” the process involves separating the plasma from a person’s blood, and replacing it with either healthy plasma or a plasma substitute. It is not dissimilar to kidney dialysis.

Carl continues to battle with the symptoms of his CIPD. He is numb in both arms from his hands to his elbows, as well as both of his legs from his feet to his thighs. When I talked to him on the phone, he sounded exhausted as he explained why his journals have stopped.

“I haven’t been doing the blog because I have been focused on my health for the past two months,” he said. “My belief is that my body did a great job of fighting the coronavirus, but got ravaged by the CIPD because of it.”

Despite the months of doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, and various treatments, Carl retains the sense of humor that entertained all of us in his journals from months ago.

“I can’t even walk to the bathroom right now,” he said. “But my intention is still to be skiing by the winter.”

During this time, Carl has received treatment from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and he could not be happier with their staff.

“The Henry Mayo team has been wonderful,” he said. “They want to see me on the slopes next winter.”

After telling me that, Carl had to go to prepare for his next treatment.

While Carl would never ask this (he’s too humble to be the center of attention), I personally would like to ask you all to keep Carl and his family in your prayers as he continues to fight this CIPD. I know I can speak for a lot of people here at the station when I say that we consider Carl to be part of our own families, as he has had such a significant impact on many of our lives.

For me personally, Carl has been a mentor, a collaborator, and a friend. If it was not for Carl Goldman, I would never have gotten to do half of what this job has allowed me to, from covering politics live from Sacramento to traveling into the stratosphere with local teachers.

Everyone here in our newsroom, as well as the entirety of the radio station, knows just how stubborn Carl can be when he sets his mind on something, so I have no doubt that he will come out of this on top.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

You will beat this just as you did Covid 19! ?

  7. I echo Michael’s sentiments – Carl and Jeri gave me my first real job out of college and mentored me selflessly for the next four years. Carl has a tenacity that I have yet to witness elsewhere, so I’m confident if anyone can overcome this it is him. He’s also one of the most generous and caring people I’ve known, so I’m going to be praying like crazy for a full recovery! Miss you guys, let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

  13. Wow! I had no idea he was even still dealing with this! Seems like we were hearing every day from him during his ordeal on the ship and after. I assumed he had since completely recovered because the last we heard was he was better and coming home. Very sorry to hear that he is still dealing with it and is in such bad shape! Man, this Covid 19 thing is a real tough thing to completely get over! Really ravages you in ways they never expected! Of course we wish him the best and hope he finally gets over this 100%! Is what we think he needs is a couple margaritas from Betitos! Everyone knows they have great medicinal properties! ?

  14. Carl Stephen and I have been keeping you in our prayers every day. With your positive attitude and your wife’s very positive attitude we know that you can beat this. Just as he wanted to use you as part of the studies for the Covid they will all be scratching their heads asking you to be in more studies for this because they won’t know what happened when you recover. We know this is a very difficult time for you and Jeri.

  49. Yeah didn’t they LIE to the Japanese airline that they were virus-free to get on the flight? And didn’t Carl come down with the symptoms mid-flight? What about the rest of the passengers he willingly endangered? And for being so humble, he sure did run right out to become a media darling. What a piece of trash.

    • “William” —
You do not have your facts straight. “They” did not lie to anyone. Neither Carl nor any of the other Americans repatriated with positive test results knew the results because those results were late arriving.

Japanese officials did not report the positive results until AFTER these passengers had departed the ship and boarded the buses that were to take them to the airport. The results only went to the US State Department (responsible for evacuating the American citizens from the Diamond Princess and returning them to the US). The passengers [who had positive test results] were not informed of those results until they were back in the United States.

Furthermore, no one lied to a Japanese airline or any other airline. The State Department chartered the two aircraft for the exclusive purpose of repatriation from Phoenix Air, a US company based in Georgia. Carl Goldman did NOT “willingly endanger” anyone. Your comments verge on a written defamation. You owe him an apology.

  50. Carl, its been years but I just decided to check u out after uncovering some old K100 things and saw this post on you .
I wish u a speedy recovery and trust u r in the best hands.

Thank u for helping and teaching me during my college days.

    Your friend,

  51. Carl, you have always been such a beacon of positivity! Sending you healing thoughts and energy. And wishes for a speedy recovery,

    Best,
    Chris Coyle
