College of the Canyons officials have announced that they will suspend all in-person instruction beginning Monday in an effort to reduce potential exposure to the coronavirus.
The suspension is also said to be instrumental to the college’s current transition of all in-person classes to online learning formats.
“We have been monitoring the coronavirus outbreak since the very beginning to ensure the safety of our students and staff members,” said College of the Canyons Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook. “The suspension of in-person classes will help us curb the spread of this virus throughout our campus communities and will give employees the time needed to transition to a remote-learning model.”
In-person classes are scheduled be transitioned to remote instructional delivery during the week of March 16 and will resume in their new format no later than Monday, March 23.
Online and hybrid classes are still expected to continue to be held online without disruption.
While the vast majority of classes are set to move to a remote-learning model, programs such as nursing, medical lab technology and emergency medical technician require mandated hours of instruction for program completion. Officials say that these programs will continue to meet with modifications made to ensure social distancing so that students can comply with external accreditation requirements.
The college has also canceled many large college events in compliance with the state’s ban on large gatherings.
“I want to thank the collaborative efforts of our administrators, faculty members and support staff who have worked tirelessly during this rapidly changing situation, the likes of which our campus community has never encountered before,” Van Hook said.
