COVID-19 Case Numbers Remain High, Hospitalizations Decrease In Los Angeles County

On Saturday the L.A. County Department of Public Health revealed that case numbers remain high as 2,130 new cases have been confirmed along with 29 new deaths. 

The Delta variant accounts for 100 percent of COVID-19 strains seen among samples sequenced in the L.A Angeles County area. The Delta variant is more said to be more infectious and efficiently transmitted between people compared with earlier COVID-19 strains. 

On Friday, a U.S Food and Drug Administration advisory committee recommended COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for specific groups of high-risk individuals including people 65 and older and those at high risk of severe illness.

Of the 29 new deaths reported Saturday, three people who passed away were over the age of 80, nine people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, eight people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, seven people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64, and seven person who died was between the ages of 30 and 49.

To date, Public Health identified 1,442,808 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 25,828  deaths.

There are 1,125 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 30 percent of these people are in the ICU. This is a decrease of 93 daily hospitalizations in the past week. 

As of Saturday, Sept.18, 33,806 cumulative cases have been reported in the Santa Clarita Valley since March of 2020, according to Public Health. These cases include:

  • 25,847 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+29)
  • 62 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • 1,107 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+6)
  • 4,312 in Castaic* (+15)
  • 70 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • 4 in Placerita Canyon
  • 18 in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon
  • 22 in unincorporated Sand Canyon
  • 160 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 47 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country (+1)
  • 1,605 in Stevenson Ranch (+4)
  • 414 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde (+2)
  • 263 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia (+1)

Public Health encourages everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. Anyone 12 and older living or working in L.A. County can get vaccinated against COVID-19. Many vaccination sites across the county, including all the County-run sites, are also offering third doses of vaccine to eligible immunocompromised people. Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status.
