First Santa Clarita Coronavirus COVID-19 Case Reported

The first coronavirus COVID-19 case has been reported in Santa Clarita, officials said Friday.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital received the first result indicating a patient tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

“We had a positive COVID-19 test come back,” said Moody. “We don’t have a COVID-19 patient at the hospital.”

In cases of coronavirus, if the symptoms do not require hospitalization, the patient is asked to self-quarantine at home, according to Moody.

Henry Mayo has procedures in place to screen patients and visitors who show signs or symptoms of the Coronavirus and who have a history that would indicate they are at risk of the disease, according to the hospital.

If such a person is identified, they would be isolated and evaluated for their eligibility for a Coronavirus test. If they are not deemed eligible to be tested then the person will be sent home with appropriate instructions, according to hospital officials.

If they are deemed eligible to be tested then a test will be administered. If the person tested is not seriously ill, then he or she would be sent home and asked to self-quarantine until the test results come in.

If the test results come back positive and the person is still relatively healthy, then that person would be asked to continue to self-quarantine. If the person is not well enough to go home and requires admission to the hospital, then we will treat them appropriately in an isolated room, according to the hospital.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

First Santa Clarita Coronavirus COVID-19 Case Reported

  1. Are you informing those that had contact with this person? Public should know the locations of potential contamination.

    • What doe they mean that the person isn’t in the hospital? Did they get sent back home or where are they?

      • Yes. Onl tested positive, not sick enough to be hospitalized zed and has to self quarantine for 14 days, meaning stay home and don’t come in contact with anyone

    • Come on they’re not that smart. That would be the rational and logical thing to do. If they were smart they asked the person every place they’ve been in the last 72 hours they let those facilities know so they can sterilize and show people who’ve been there with in the last couple days could take no and maybe Quarantine themselves at home so they don’t just keep spreading

      • Yes, what you said is exactly what should have happened, and what actually has been happening in other country such as South Korea. All of routes and contacts of the infected person must be disclosed to belonging societies to mitigate the virus spreading

  2. So where is the patient? At home? Whhere have they been? When were they released to self-quarantine? More details are NECESSARY

  3. Umm…I have a hunch, it’s a hoax, there are only 15 cases, warm weather will eliminate the virus, testing has gone incredibly well, anyone can be tested, it’s all a media hype, it’s a deep state conspiracy, etc.,. Well, well, well now it’s a national emergency, a worldwide pandemic; schools are closing, stock market crashes, sporting events are cancelled, travel industry is decimated, people are panic buying etc., What a complete lack of leadership, accountability, foresight and failure to provide for the public’s safety. The first case of Coronavirus in China was November 17, 2019; the first case of community transmission in the UNITED STATES was January 30, 2020. Today is March 13, 2020; way to be proactive NOT.

    • So, the 3,000 people that have died in China is fake? You must be a Trump Supporter, is the world flat and is the White Race the superior race? lol haha

      • Try reading and comprehending my comment again. I clearly am pointing out the failure of this unqualified, intellectually challenged, incompetent, immoral and unethical con man.

      • Hey don’t get Trump supporters in this, we all don’t feel like that guy. And Trump is still the best pick out of the choices again.

        • He is a pitiful leader…. Let me rephrase that. He’s not even close to a leader! Everything he does and says is complete opposite to what he should be showing as a leader. Why don’t you shake his hand? Anyone but trump!

      • I live in Santa clarita and schools have been shut down because of the virus. it is in California.

      • Lol and u must be a sheep just like the rest of brainwashed America! Bet u believe that are presidents are real to like they really have control no they take the heat for the people higher up!! Wanting people to fight and pick sides wake upp hole agenda here

    • Poor Saul, he didn’t recognize sarcasm when he read it but, at least he got a lol and haha out of your comment. Oh boy…

    • It’s only a ‘hoax’ until it gets a little too close for comfort, right?
Look, if this was all a hoax, they’ve done a superb job making it look like all those people in China and Italy and Iran had coronavirus…maybe these are a hoax too?
      SO WELL ORCHESTRATED! Bravo!

  4. The gaslighting leader of our Country says it’s a Hoax. Unfortunately This Hoax is killing people. Way to go Captain Chaos.

  5. What’s the name of the person who has it? If we know the person, and came in contact with the person… We could get tested.

    • There are limited tests. You have to reach certain requirements before a test will be administered. If they think you have it and don’t qualify for a test they have you self quarantine

    • Does HIPA mean anything to you?

They are not going to release the name of the patient. Would you want them to release YOUR name? Where YOU live? How about your SSN? No come on.

They will tell the places they visited to clean their facility. If the facility puts up a notice or the CDC says this patient has visited this place and that place how fast would they go under? What if they visited COSTCO? Would you toss your precious TP that you cleverly hoarded from there? Or maybe spray it with all that Lysol that you stocked in overly cautious abundance in that three car garage?

Let’s all pump the brakes. Seriously getting out of hand. Should we not have prepared for this back in November or are we all so blind to think this brilliant leadership would prepare us for such an event. So cal people! For reals! What if a quake hit, are you not prepared? You should be, living here in SoCal! We should have been the leaders in preparedness not the laughing stock of the country.

If you feel symptomatic, call the doctor, tell work I ain’t coming in, self quarantine for two weeks and turn on the Net Flicks for binge watching of whatever has been building up in the que line.

      Stay dry everybody-blessings.

      • No need to release the name. Local public health officials are the ones to do the contact tracing and contacting the people potentially infected.
Some counties/cities have stopped contact tracing…too much work to do at this point. I don’t know what the City of Santa Clarita has decided about contact tracing.

  6. I don’t believe we should know the individual’s name but we should know at what stores or companies he/she may have been to in the last 14 days. That would settle some anxieties.

  7. This guy should just stay at the hospital so he wouldn’t infect anyone else. It would be stupid for him to go home.

    • That would risk everyone at the hospital.. including doctors and nurses as myself.. the best way to contain is to stay home if you have any symptoms. Do not go to the hospital or ER without notifying them if you thing you have it… i believe by tomorrow there will be an online way to assess and they will direct individuals to drive thru testing…

  8. where are the reporters?
    when was the test administered?
what area does the person live? work? school? family?
was the person reported and was there follow up?
    and my other general questions:
how many people have asked to have the test?
how many tests have been done?
how many results are not known yet?
was this the only positive test?

  9. So now the kids will be out of school again. Instead of being in school learning they will be at the mall, movies, other public places with their friends. They won’t catch anything now huh? Unbelievable!

  10. I think if we needed to know, as had contact they would reach out to us. There are HIPA laws, they can’t say too much. You would not want your info given out. People are getting death threats over this. Let’s just all do our part and hope the person who has it has a mild case and can rest easily at home. That’s where I would want to be. Praying they feel better and get thru this fast!

  11. I am uneasy to think a positive case is in our valley and a good possibility of spreading this to a great deal of other people. Who deems it NECESSARY for a person to be tested? If they show signs or not feeling well ? I understand there is an incubation period of 14 days (?) and just to send them home, hoping they stay at home and not thinking this was a hoax walking all over the place. I think SCV is doing the right thing and pretty much shutting our town down. This is the only way to keep (hoping) people at home and reduce the spread. We all have seen the panic of people in every store stocking up their cupboards, the pushing and shoving and anxiety levels on reserve. Maybe we need to re-think the seriousness of this virus and listen for a change.

    • And listen to medical experts, not Trump, who when told to sneeze into his elbow answered the phone.

      • Sorry, but many medical ‘experts’ are not giving clear or sound advice. “Don’t wear a mask, it doesn’t help”, says the doctor who doesn’t seem to know that this virus aerosolizes. “Don’t hoard masks because it will create a shortage for healthcare workers!”, says the same doc who says masks don’t work.
It’s like the flu. Nope. The transmission rate of the flu is an Ro of less than 1 (one person with the flu with transmit it to an average of 1 person). The transmission rate Ro of this virus is upwards to 7 and some research data suggests it’s higher. CDC has not been transparent. Telling people to just wash your hands well and cough and sneeze into the bend of your arm. This is important but this virus aerosolizes and can be breathed in or it can enter through any mucous membrane (eyes, nose, mouth, stomach, etc). In the beginning, we were told that only certain people would be tested (only those who traveled to China recently or had been around someone with a confirmed case of COVID, then they changed the criteria after the first case of community transmission occurred and said they would test all those who had symptoms consistent with COVID, but they didn’t. Then they said they didn’t have enough tests, then they said they had plenty of tests, then they said they had plenty of tests but they couldn’t use them b/c they were missing a reagent, then Pelosi yesterday says we have plenty of tests and what we need to do is “test, test, test”. Except people are complaining that they were having difficulty getting the test done even when they presented with fever and respiratory symptoms and practitioners are not testing them. What BS is all of this? Long story short….we are not getting the full story and what we hear is unclea, incomplete and non transparent.

        • Wearing a mask is not protecting you ..masks are useless after one hour when moisture has set in.. wearing a mask is not comfortable for most that are not used to it and they will end up touching their face more frequently. wear gloves keep your distance 6 ft away… evenIn line don’t touch your face …follow the CDC WHO…

  12. We in the community have the right to know where this person has been. I don’t believe we need to know who it is but where they have been. It’s scary to think when this happens is it someone who could be serving food in this valley do they have kids or other family members and so on

  13. Berta González-Harper

Wow, I am really disappointed to read these very negative and Trump basing comments. This virus was let loose on the world by China, not President Trump. This administration has been doing everything possible to protect the American people and will continue to do so. Are those of you bashing President Trump aware that during President Obama’s presidency thousands of Americans died of a similar deadly virus before he even declared an emergency? How about blaming China, thanking our President and his administration for quickly looking for solutions, bringing together public and private resources to contain and resolve this crisis, and essentially closing our borders to limit even more cases imported into our country, which I am sure you complaining liberals would prevent if you could. Personally, I say thank you President Trump and all the folks proactively working to solve the problem as Americans instead of flapping your gums complaining!

    • If by calling the coronavirus a Democratic hoax is proactively working to solve the problem then saying , “I don’t take any responsibility at all” you may have had a point. But he went golfing instead. Get real.

      • Soooooo right! This should be the straw that breaks the camels’ back! Anyone who looks at Trump in a positive light now seriously needs to get a check-up from the neck-up! The Orange Bozo HAS to GO! Lying, terrible POS human being he is!

        • Ya, he should’ve waited til the US had 61 million sick with 12,500 dead before he acted and declared an emergency like Obama did with H1N1. Were you this triggered and ignorant back then too?

        • Really why!? He actually is doing something unlike the other good for nothing presidents !! Why u mad cause people can’t cross the border boo boo get same papers then come not that hard!! U sound like a child blaming trump this and that lol president dosent even have control dummy wake up

        • Yes, yes, let’s blame him for every freakin’ thing! If you get a splinter, blame Trump! Bad hair day? Blame Trump! Pathetic, absolutely pathetic, mindless blame game that holds absolutely no water. Don’t you Lefties have a better argument than this? Ya, that’s what I thought.

      • No actually, our President wanted to close the borders early on and he was told by the Dems that THAT WOULD BE RACIST. Don’t believe me? Look it up!

        • The first reported case of the virus in China was November 17, 2019. The first community transmission in the United Stares was January 30, 2020. Yesterday was March 13, 2020 and that means FOUR MONTHS passed before trump declared a national emergency!! So yes, he will be held accountable for his lack of leadership, accountability, foresight, missed opportunities, lies, dismantling of key personnel in science/medical government agencies and LYING to the American PUBLIC repeatedly. The first job of the governance is to safeguard the public; Trump has failed again. His lack of leadership and honesty has jeopardized the nation he swore to protect. READ FACTS; not opinions.

          • Are you just dumb? Do you have any idea of what declaring a national emergency means? No ones going to call an emergency when one person in China is sick, nor when a few in this country are, but a little over a month and it DID happen, The other guy waited until many thousands died… your point is not made in fact silly. Quit cut and pasting the few paragraphs you read on the internet.

    • I agree a 100%. Stop blaming Trump for everything. He is doing the best he can. This is not his fault.

  14. Ok so do we know the outcome of this person! ? I live in Santa Clarita and someone I work with has not been to work in like 6 days should I be alarmed or what!?! When will we know if WE need to get tested and our family lembrete as well and friends and kids and their friends etc etc!!

  15. How many cases does Russia have? Maybe I should ask Trump.

  16. It’s been politized. Thank you to our so called leaders. Both Dems and Republicans, and the mainstream media. Let the experts handle this and stop freaking us out. This will come to an end soon. Just like the flu season that has killed over 20,000 so far.

  17. We don’t need to know who these people are but we need to know which stores they visited for the last couple of days.how can we be sure that they’ll stay home. I think it would be a better idea for them to stay in hospital.

  18. You people who politicize this are being ridicules.

    • Tell me about it. All it’s doing is spreading more chaos and fear. But you can’t tell them that. SMH

    • Kyle, I could not agree more with your statement. It was Trump who made this a political issue by calling it a “Democratic hoax” rather than proactively dealing with this life-threatening virus. Now he’s trying to build imaginary walls to keep out what is already here. Right HERE, in our sacred Santa Clarita Valley. And you fools continue to praise and support him. Why? Have you no sense of self-preservation other than your love for guns?

  19. Well we can all tell who has lived through various pandemics in the past and who has not. No one but the Health Dept. will contact anyone that needs to be contacted. I swear I feel like I’m living through the AIDS scare all over again. ( Yes, I understand the coronavirus is easier to transmit and catch. But it is still true nonetheless.)

People do not help matters by saying things that can cause further panic and confusion. This includes politicizing . If we continue to get panicked with every diagnosis that is close to us we will soon have nothing but a good old fashioned witch hunt. So instead of panicking and causing chaos focus on what you can do to help! Follow the CDC protocols. Don’t put you or your family in any undo danger zones. Make sure you’re informed. And most of all maybe get your nose out of the internet and check on your neighbors to see if they’re okay.

Geezer louise you folks are a skittish lot!

    • Eddie the only problem about that is not even the CDC’s protocols have been effective, reliable, etc. and constantly changing. I mean even right now the CDC still states that “while the virus can be spread from asymptomatic people, this is NOT thought to be the main route of transmission” even though there has been recent mounting evidence that proves the contrary.
They even admitted themselves that there is still a lot of unknowns & much to learn about this brand new virus, so i mean come on, you can’t blame people for being so fearful, it has always been in man’s evolution to fear the unknown, and that will probably never change…

  20. I don’t think the person’s name should be released but I DO think there should be some kind of info re: the places they have been such as stores, restaurants, public functions. I live in Lancaster, Ca and my brother as well as a dear friend have been working in Santa Clarita for the past couple of weeks. The job itself wouldn’t put them at risk but the numerous trips to Home base/Home Depot (sorry, whichever one) could be a possible risk area if that person had been there. It’s not the friend himself that I worry about, it’s his people whom he lives with, visits, takes care of who are elderly with health risks, who have serious heart problems, that possibly wouldn’t survive a bout with Corona virus. Hopefully if there are places of risk, someone will let us, the concerned general public, know about them.

  21. I would love to punch everyone in these comments straight in the face. Y’all are a bunch of idiots.

  22. I am not a Trump supporter but I think this has nothing to do with him. We all make bad mistakes, bad judgment calls etc, so it’s really a waste of time to really be pointing the finger at any one person. We should be looking out for the elderly, ones who have pre existing health conditions that could make this kind of scary for them. Check on your elderly neighbors, friends or family. I lived in south LA during the riots when we had no stores and folks in my block banded together to keep everybody feed. Here I see people fighting over toilet paper. This definitely not Awsome Town but now we have a chance to make that change. God bless all, and prayers to those who are sick, and those who hearts are filled with fear.
