UPDATE: 5th Santa Clarita Coronavirus Case Confirmed

The 5th Santa Clarita coronavirus COVID-19 case has been confirmed Thursday, officials said.

The number of cases of coronavirus in Santa Clarita has now risen to five, with three in the City of Santa Clarita and additional cases in Stevenson Ranch and Castaic, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

None of these cases are currently being treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

In mild cases of coronavirus, patients are requested to self-quarantine at home, saving hospital resources for those in need, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Public health officials are unable to release the specific location or identity of these coronavirus patients due to privacy laws.

The Department of Public Health will follow up appropriately to evaluate what prior contacts that COVID-19 patient may have had, what their interactions with the community may have had and will help identify any other at-risk community people that could have been exposed, said Dr. Bud Lawrence with Henry Mayo of the three previous cases which tested positive at the hospital.

Across Los Angeles County, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has risen to 230, with two deaths associated with COVID-19.

“As we know, we can’t contain the virus; we can only slow it’s spread, and help mitigate its spread over time and mitigate the consequences on individuals’ health and life,” said Dr. Christina Ghaly, the county director of health services.

All Santa Clarita schools and many businesses across the valley have been closed to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Henry Mayo has procedures in place to screen patients and visitors who show signs or symptoms of the Coronavirus and who have a history that would indicate they are at risk of the disease, according to the hospital.

If such a person is identified, they would be isolated and evaluated for their eligibility for a Coronavirus test. If they are not deemed eligible to be tested then the person will be sent home with appropriate instructions, according to hospital officials.

If they are deemed eligible to be tested then a test will be administered. If the person tested is not seriously ill, then he or she would be sent home and asked to self-quarantine until the test results come in.

If the test results come back positive and the person is still relatively healthy, then that person would be asked to continue to self-quarantine. If the person is not well enough to go home and requires admission to the hospital, then we will treat them appropriately in an isolated room, according to the hospital.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, the CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. Please add, after using a tissue and throwing it in the trash, WASH THOSE HANDS!

  2. Can the Virus do what Chick-fil-a couldn’nt?
How about opening a drive-thru testing center
where the Boston Market formerly was. We
need these testing locations w/o lots of hoops
    thru which we must jump.

  3. Whatever happens, I definitely wouldn’t want to go to our local hospital! They don’t call it “Killer Mayo” for nothing! Go there, you end up dead!

  4. I happened to think Henry Mayo is a Great hospital..

  5. I wouldn’t want to go any place else. Great hospital amazing doctors and nurses. Latest. State of the art equipment.

    • For every one of your comments stating that Killer Mayo is a great hospital, there’s 10 others with horror stories! Say what you will, but its had a bad reputation for decades! I wouldn’t take someone I dislike there, and even in an emergency, just saying, I wouldn’t let anyone take me there ever! We’ve had bad experiences there, family members, and friends as well, not to mention stories I’ve heard right from the horses’ mouth over the years from acquaintances, etc., and people I don’t even know! I have heard recently that it’s gotten better, but hey, I ain’t going there for any reason!

      • Please, don’t go there! I would hate to be the person sitting right next to you while listen to all these complaints. If it’s good or not is the least of our concerns. Nurses and Drs are both staying up and working long hour shifts non-stop. Trying to help the best they can, with what they’re working with. I hate Prude people who expect special treatment. It’s a hospital not an Individualize high end aftercare. Let’s be grateful we’re healthy and fortunate to not be affected by this terrible virus. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!

      • I lost my mother at Henry Mayo due to MRSA that she caught while she was there for another reason. No thanks.

  6. Remember people, the article states that those who have been tested positive “are requested to stay at home and self isolate” as this frees up the beds for those in real need. So in the meantime, the infected person can still run errands and go about their business quite possibly infecting even more people. So again, why do they not quarantine these five people and stop them. Who is watching over them to make sure they are following the “request” to stay home.

I agree HMNMH is a great hospital, but they need to step up and quarantine those infected or the number will continue to go up. Just my opinion…

    • Agreed we need an officer to drive by these houses and make sure no one is leaving that house. Or they need to be put in a quarantine facility. Maybe a cruise ship for the sick

      • Yeah. As long as it’s not you though. Or your family. Then of course your rights would be violated.

        • I agree with you. People need to be careful for what they wish. A new world order will be enforced soon and we won’t all have rights. Like they teach us in the military “If one does it we’re all held responsible equally.”

  7. I HAVE FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS FEVER 102, COUGHING DRY, RUNNING NOSE, BODY ACHE. CALLED KAISER TWICE AND REQUESTED TO BE TESTED FOR COVID-19, BUT THEY SAY ONLY EMERGENCY PATIENTS. HOW DO I GET TESTED TO KNOW WHAT I HAVE IF MY OWN SERVICE PROVIDER DONT CARE. I WORKED WITH 300 OTHER EMPLOYEES WHO I THINK ARE AT RISK. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW IF I HAVE COVID-19. ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO GET TE TEST DONE. I AM IN SELF QUARANTINE AT HOME. CAN HENRY MAYO HELP ME?
