Gyms, Day Camps Reopening In Los Angeles County Starting Friday

Gyms, day camps and sports without live audiences are allowed to reopen starting Friday, as Los Angeles County continues the COVID-19 recovery, officials said.

The L.A. County “Safer at Home” order is relaxing effective June 12, now moving into Phase 3 of reopening, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Museums, galleries, zoos, aquariums and outdoor recreation areas, including swimming pools, are also allowed to reopen Friday.

Music, film, and television production are also allowed to commence starting June 12 with modifications.

“As a reminder, employees and visitors to these businesses will always need to wear a cloth face covering when they’re around other people and practice physical distancing at least six feet are wherever possible,” Ferrer said. “It remains so important for all of us businesses and residents to follow the directives.”

Meanwhile, bars within the county are permitted to reopen if they are partnered with a local restaurant, food truck, or caterer.

“This enables businesses to support one another and get employees back to work,” Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Los Angeles County leaders are focusing on communities “most impacted” by COVID-19, as people of color continue to die at higher rates from coronavirus.

Communities of color and medically-underserved communities are seeing much higher rated of COVID-19, according to Supervisor Hilda Solis.

“COVID-19 has not been a true equalizer and we know that there is a disproportionate impact on communities of color particularly black, Latino, indigenous and others,” Solis said. “We must address these racial disparities head-on and prioritize the most impacted neighborhoods.”

L.A. County is increasing the number of clinics and COVID-19 testing in these areas, according to Solis.

An additional 1,275 COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday throughout Los Angeles County.

The County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 67,064 according to Ferrer.

Ferrer noted that due to testing backlogs from over the weekend, the number of new cases reported on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually higher.

Over 730,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted across Los Angeles County, with about eight percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

However, she noted last week that 86 percent of people who tested positive were asymptomatic, underlining the need for social distancing and other measures in order to prevent spread to others.

7,097 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 11 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 1,448 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

61 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 2,768 in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer.

“I know there are so many families that are experiencing the profound grief of losing a loved one to COVID-19 please now we’re so sorry we wish you healing and peace during this very difficult time,” Ferrer said.

About 93 percent of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

The percentage has stayed “consistent” through the pandemic, according to Public Health officials.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 2,326 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  1. Well I really am confused at the media, town hall people, the CDC and any health provider: is the Corona virus still killing people with underline health issues? My ex husband died 2 weeks ago of this virus leaving behind a son. So public places are opening up again with “strict guidelines which I saw on the news of people waiting in line again, not 6 ft apart, not wearing masks ect. So with all the protesting that’s been going on and lack of awareness of this virus during protesting, I really like how Fred Rogan put it, “let’s wait a couple of weeks , get people tested, stay in contact with the CDC and see what has happened “. Personally I think the US will see a giant spike in deaths and spreading. Very sad how people are being selfish and not adhering to public safety. As the motto is “it’s not effecting me.” I pray that I’m wrong but we’ll see.

    • But you are so RIGHT Theresa! It doesn’t make sense, does it?! But then, it DOES because more people care about money than people! It starts at the top, and that’s what we’re seeing. On the news we hear ‘woo-hoo”! You can all go out, and in that same sentence, they say you shouldn’t go out! Stay home! It’s still not safe! It’s crazy! Seems that they’re relying on people to use common sense, and we know how dangerous THAT is! So now we will all have to suffer for it! Really sucks. Well humans are their own worst enemy! And aren’t we seeing enough of that lately??
My sincere condolences to you and your family for your loss. So sad……
