COVID-19 (coronavirus) Q&A at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital

Henry Mayo’s Senior Vice President & Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Larry Kidd, Ph.D. was joined by hospital social worker Elizabeth Tarantini Friday afternoon to answer questions that Santa Clarita residents may have during the outbreak of COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus.
“It takes a number of individuals to take care of patients in a hospital, and here at Henry Mayo we have an interdisciplinary team,” Kidd said. “Social work is one of those valuable team members.”
Tarantini discussed the importance of staying connected during the “Safer at Home” order issued by Los Angeles County, as “isolation breeds depression and anxiety.”
“We have a lot of family who are very high risk,” she said. “So making sure that we’re making those connections and taking the time to connect with family, with grandparents, parents, things like that. It really helps maintain that connection and helps us through those times of anxiety and uncertainty that we all have right now.”
Tarantini went on to talk about how keeping a consistent schedule can help residents maintain a sense of normalcy.
“Thrive on consistency,” she said. “It’s really important to establish a routine, especially during the week.”
Kidd would also address the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC’s) recommendation for residents to use non-medical cloth face masks.
“That is recommended when you are in public, such as being in a grocery store,” Kidd said, “The wearing of such material to cover your nose and mouth is for the purpose primarily of protecting other people.”
The two also discussed testing for the virus, the importance of social distancing, and whether or not surgeries are still happening during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Wow masks are to protect other people? I call bull ,if your in a grocery store with people exhaling virus particles into the air common sense should tell you “you better put something over your nose on mouth before you breathe this virus in” if it doesn’t tell you that I feel sorry for you. CDC failed us on that one if they recommended that weeks ago we would probably have less dead less infected and less of a spread
Will, get a grip, please! Of course masks help protect you. But if you have the virus and are asymptomatic you will spread it to others unless you are …. wearing a mask. Think mutual protection.
What the CDC means is that you may not know you have it as being a symptomatic you don’t show signs of being sick but you carry the virus. So everyone should wear masks because we could be carriers! Stay home and everyone please where a mask! The longer we don’t follow recommendations the longer we will be in this situation!
