Henry Mayo Officials Address Teenage Anxiety, Depression Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Officials with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital recently discussed the mental and emotional impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic are having on Santa Clarita’s teenage community.

On Friday, local pediatrician Neela Sethi, MD joined Bud Lawrence, MD, Medical Director of Henry Mayo’s Emergency Department for livestream on Facebook.

“She has been so gracious and kind to come in and talk with us about what’s going on here and now with COVID-19, not only in our pediatric community but in our community in general,” Lawrence said.

Sethi said that teenage anxiety is currently “through the roof” during the current pandemic, as young people are unable to leave their homes and see their friends.

“Teenagers are anxious at baseline,” she said. “Add in social media pressure and the pressure of school, and that’s enough to be almost too much. Throw in a global pandemic and social isolation, and that’s just a whole lot.”

In order to combat this, Sethi recommends that parents have their kids put their electronics down and to engage in other activities, from hiking to baking to journaling.

“Those are such simple things that really do help,” she said. “You have to think about decreasing their anxiety by increasing their endorphins.”

The pair also discussed testing for coronavirus immunity and adolescent nutrition while under the “Safer at Home” order.

  1. It makes it more vulnerable for youngsters of “helicopter” parents to help the emotionally unstable kids being taught in schools where they give participation trophies to everyone, regardless of attributes/achievements! They grow up to be delicate, over-sensitive/coddled children constantly whinny about the true hard facts of today!
