Highest One-Day Increase In Coronavirus Cases, Hospitalizations Reported In L.A. County

The highest one-day increase of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations since March has been reported in Los Angeles County Tuesday, officials said.

41 additional Santa Clarita Valley coronavirus cases have been confirmed Tuesday, with an additional 4,244 cases being confirmed within Los Angeles County, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The Santa Clarita Valley total is now 3,658 and the L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases now stands at 140,307 as of Tuesday, according to the public health department.

A total of 2,103 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, according to LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer. This remains substantially higher than the 1,350 to 1,450 daily hospitalizations seen four weeks ago, according to DPH officials.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that are mourning a loved one lost to COVID-19,” said Ferrer. “As a community, we must slow the spread of COVID-19 to prevent an overwhelming surge of COVID-19 in our hospitals and more untimely deaths. I urge you to wear a face covering, stay at home as much as possible, avoid close contact with people you don’t live with and wash your hands.”

Testing results are available for over 1,387,000 individuals as of Tuesday, with a positivity rate of 9 percent, according to public health officials.

73 additional deaths have been reported within the County Tuesday, for a total of 3,894 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County.

“Together, we can stop the spread of this deadly virus,” Ferrer said. “Today’s numbers are alarming and unfortunately are the result of many businesses and individuals not adhering to the basic public health requirements of distancing and wearing face coverings. We are just not able to continue on a recovery journey without everyone doing their part. Keeping businesses open is only possible if we get back to slowing the spread.”

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Monday, Henry Mayo has conducted 4,316 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 454 have tested positive, and 484 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

Some local patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

There are 15 patients in the hospital as of Monday, while 137 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to the hospital.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.
