Indoor operations for nail salons are able to reopen in California counties currently under the highest state restrictions Tuesday under new guidelines announced by California.
Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said during a press briefing that the state has relaxed restrictions on nail salons and will allow counties to make their own decisions on when nail salons in their area can reopen.
“After consideration from a number of different sources, looking at the evidence, understanding how sectors fit into our entire framework, we are announcing a move and we will be working with our counties and our local sector leaders around nail salons being able to move into the purple tier,” said Ghaly.
Ghaly stated that more information would be shared “soon.”
The move still has to be approved by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for businesses to reopen in L.A. County.
“Public Health will be consulting with the Board of Supervisors to determine the timing of adopting changes to the County Health Officer Order that would allow nail salons to resume under modified indoor operations,” a statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued Tuesday reads.
The decision applies statewide, even in counties that are in the most-restrictive tier of the state’s economic-reopening roadmap, such as Los Angeles County.

Previously, L.A. County nail salons had been allowed to operate outdoors with special licensing board approval and would have only been allowed to reopen when L.A. County moved to a less restrictive tier.
The process included “looking at the operations of nail salons, understanding the number of steps they can take to make a lower risk environment for both staff and customers, with some new additions to that sector guidance and how to set up operations at a lower risk,” according to Ghaly.
L.A. County nail salons had previously been allowed to reopen back in June, before the county required their closure for indoor operations again in mid-July.
As of Tuesday, Los Angeles County remains in the most restrictive purple tier which means “widespread,” according to the state.

Orange County has schools open and businesses too. This virus has been politicized. Neighboring counties are opening and doing so safely.
Newsom and Garcetti would make better rodeo clowns than politicians.
It’s ridiculous! Are crowded city buses in LA county somehow safer than nail salons where people are spread out with masks and face shields and dividers between everyone? It makes no sense whatsoever! Why are nail salons being singled out?
I’m also seeing kids’ team sports being allowed with no social distancing or mask wearing whatsoever. The kids all sit together shoulder to shoulder and the parents all squish together on the bleachers to get seats in the shade. Why the nonsense discrepancy with what’s allowed and what’s not allowed?
Hey—-get all the biz you can!! At this rate, they’re just gonna close again! ?
The Orange County schools that opened, just opened today. We don’t know yet if it was a good idea, do we?
I work in the dental field…if we can reopen then nail salons should be able to reopen. We are way more susceptible than nail salons….absolutely ridiculous!!!
You make a good point!
