L.A. County Bars, Nightclubs To Close Amid Rising Coronavirus Cases

Bars and nightclubs across Los Angeles County are set to close due to rising coronavirus cases following more relaxed rules.

As restrictions ease across the state and coronavirus cases rise, seven California counties, including Los Angeles, have been ordered to re-close their bars and nightclubs.

“COVID-19 is still circulating in California, and in some parts of the state, growing stronger,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a written statement. “That’s why it is critical we take this step to limit the spread of the virus in the counties that are seeing the biggest increases.”

On Saturday, June 27, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 2,169 new cases of COVID-19 and 23 additional deaths. The total cumulative cases in the county are 95,371 and 3,285 deaths, as of Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, Newsom urged Imperial County, near San Diego and the border with Mexico, to reinstate the stay-at-home order as COVID-19 testing positivity rate has been about 23 percent in the past two weeks, about four times higher than the state as a whole at about 5 percent.

L.A. County was granted a variance by the state in May which allows for a phased reopening, but the governor said he is able to slow down, or even reverse the reopening process if the county does not meet the criteria.

“We have the capacity and ability to toggle back in terms of the stay-at-home order,” Newsom said during a press conference on Thursday.

  1. Closing businesses and further hurting small business owners and employees. BUT the kids can keep rioting. Worst leadership. How come nobody addressed the riots and protests? Meantime, the working class suffer. Seems to be the way it works in Democratic run states.

  2. Protests by nature will/did starkly contrast with those social distancing efforts that are so crucial to limit the spread of the coronavirus according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health dept.

But for many protesters, the need for protests outweighed the risks or consequences of the pandemic. This has puts disease “modelers” in the position of considering the amount of viral transmission the protesters are likely to have caused.

According to Dr. Oxiris Barbot, the city’s health commissioner, “Staying inside is the safest way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If you do go out, our message is to wear face coverings; be diligent about washing hands; and certainly, when at all possible, maintain 6 feet of distance, huh.

  3. Thank you Gov Newsom for this action. Our window of opportunity in this healthcare crisis is so very limited. Unfortunately, it is as if the actions we took over the past few months have been wasted since the demand to ‘re-open’ too early without ANY state meeting the criteria to do so safely overwhelmed the concerns for our collective well-being. Let’s do this right this time; perhaps follow the examples of NY, South Korea, Italy, Spain and New Zealand which all have a firm handle on this situation and statistically are well below domestic and international norms NOW due to strict adherence to public safety regulations. This is not to say they did not suffer tremendous losses because they did, but they are now either re-opened or in the process of re-opening slowly and safely. We can too CA; please let’s wear a mask, practice social distancing and stay home if possible.

  4. Star P,
Thank you & let’s hope for the best possible outcome for all.

  5. Riots are over? Corona -COVID back on again? What bandwagon is it this week?! ?

  6. Close bars,,,,, continue to kill the economy, but protests and riots, all good?
Please tell me Newsom didn’t close rioting and after hours “shopping”
Funny how the media covid scare completely stopped while the protests and rioting ensued and then as soon as the protests died down we are right back to the covid scare.

  7. If you look into the Counties he is closing they all have prisons in the County, and we all know the prisons are being hard hit with COVID. Our prisons out here in SVC acccount for over 1700 cases of our approximate 3000. Take out the numbers in prisons and give us true numbers so that communities do not have to think there are inflated amounts of people walking around with COVID. Such a joke !

  8. That is how media coverage works. Covid19 was never not covered, other items came along, like the maskless demonstrators demonstratoring to open up businesses, Memorial Day irresponsible behavior in many states, and the protestors calling for social justice. Then came the big story of Pence finally allowing himself to say “Wear a mask” and putting one on. Huge! All along, coverage of Covid19 has been there too.
I am wondering why you think this is scare tactics and somehow not real when it is worldwide. It’s puzzling to me.

  9. Look at whose the whiner! It’s YOU! You’re one of those nuts that thinks that way! LOL! ?
