L.A. County COVID-19 Cases Increase Nearly 10-Fold In A Month

Los Angeles  County reported over 31,000 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, nearly 10 times the number of new cases reported at the same time last month.

On January 17, L.A. County reported 31,576 new COVID-19 cases, nearly 10 times the number of cases reported one month ago on Dec. 17, when Public Health reported 3,360 new cases, officials announced Monday.

Monday, there were also 27 new deaths due to COVID-19 in Los Angeles County. The number of cases and deaths are likely to reflect reporting delays over the holiday weekend, Public Health officials cautioned.

“Our hearts and prayers are with all those mourning the loss of their loved ones from COVID,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of Public Health. “On this national holiday where we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, we remember his deep commitment to health equity. As Reverend King memorably said, ‘Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death.’ Tragically, we have seen this play out in real life and very clearly over the past two years with the disparate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people of color. From the onset of the pandemic, communities of color have experienced the greatest devastation from COVID-19 in Los Angeles County and throughout the nation.”

January 2022 has once again broken multiple records in terms of the highest number of cases reported on a single day, as well as the highest number of deaths since April 2021. While the number of daily deaths has not reached the devastating toll that was seen last January, the increasing number of cases is a concerning sign for public health experts.

Ferrer has pointed out repeatedly over the past two years that an increase in deaths often accompanies a surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, although on a slight delay. She also once again encouraged local residents to either get vaccinated, or get their booster shots in order to help ensure that contacting COVID-19 would not be a death sentence.

“As we continue to implement strategies – enforcing worker protections through our Health Officer Orders, providing resources needed by many to survive the impact of the pandemic, funding community-based organizations in hard-hit areas to serve as trusted public health messengers, and increasing vaccination access in under-sourced neighborhoods – we also need to come together to address the impact that racism, historical disinvestment, and social marginalization have on COVID-19 outcomes,” Ferrer continued. “While these conditions predate the pandemic, without deliberate collective actions to address the root causes of health inequities, we are unlikely to close the gaps we have documented for 2 long years.”

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, unvaccinated individuals were 10 times more likely to test positive for COIVIS-19, and 20 times more likely to die from COVID compared to those who were fully-vaccinated.

A wide range of data and dashboards on COVID-19 from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health are available on the Public Health website:

Public Health encourages everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated. Anyone 12 and older living or working in L.A. County can get vaccinated against COVID-19. Many vaccination sites across the county, including all the County-run sites, are also offering third doses of vaccine to eligible immunocompromised people.

Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status. County Vaccination website (English) or Vacunate Los Angeles website (Spanish).

  1. At what point will people realize that total cases is a meaningless metric, that the ~30% unvaccinated are now simply willing to accept the risk of the virus over being vaccinated, and finally, is ANYONE going to report that the vaccination does NOT stop the spread? I am vaccinated, boosted and still got infected. We need to start learning to live with this. Places that are more locked down are not more immune to the spread.

  2. You are alive to tell us this. You are vaccinated.

    • Yeah, because most people still under the age of 70 have over 99% chance of survival genius whether you are vaccinated or not. Now go back to your corporate fascist media fear porn within your mass formation psychosis.

  3. Let’s Go Brandon and Karen

  4. 99% chance of survival genius… interesting concept!
Any doctor will tell you that when a vaccinated person gets the Omicron variant Most do better than the unvaccinated. It is a fact.
800,000 Americans DEAD doesn’t bother you? Why are you calling something real fear porn, Alex?
