Largest One-Day Spike In Santa Clarita Valley Coronavirus Cases Reported Due To Backlog

The largest one-day spike in Santa Clarita coronavirus cases has been reported Friday, with an additional 122 cases, in part due to a backlog in test results, officials said.

The next highest one-day COVID-19 count for the Santa Clarita Valley was 54 reported cases on May 13, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

As of Friday afternoon, a total of 1,282 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 734 in the City of Santa Clarita
  • 37 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 442 in Castaic*
    • As of Friday, May 29, this included 429 cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 57 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 34 in Stevenson Ranch
  • Seven in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 23 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall

Additionally, 11 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as eight in Agua Dulce.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials have administered a total of 1,555 tests as of Wednesday, 208 of which have returned positive, and 1,289 of which have returned negative, with 42 still pending, according to hospital spokesperson Patrick Moody.

Some patients have been tested more than once, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to the spokesperson.

While nine patients are hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of last Wednesday, 73 have recovered and have been discharged, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Officials with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital reported that two additional COVID-19 deaths Wednesday have been confirmed at the hospital, while 77 total patients have recovered and been released since the pandemic began earlier this year.

Hospital officials could not release any information on the deceased patients due to privacy laws, including things such as age or health history.

The two additional deaths brings the total number of deaths in the Santa Clarita Valley to at least 20, according to officials.

The current patients are being treated on a designated floor of the newly-built patient tower, with each patient receiving the correct level of care without using beds in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the hospital.

Other health centers in the Santa Clarita Valley are also conducting coronavirus tests, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

A total of 51,562 coronavirus cases have been identified across the County as of Friday, as well as an additional 50 deaths, bringing the Los Angeles County total death count to 2,290

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.

The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least until June, according to County officials.

Residents are encouraged to stay at home, according to the county public health order.

  1. 20 family members of our scv community have died so far, sorry for your losses, keep those masks on its not over yet.

  2. Elaine Bingham, are you listening now? Your White Privilege won’t save you from the deadly virus nor will listening to the president, watching FOXNEWS or listening to Sean Hannity, and please be assured, they couldn’t care less about you.

  3. I think so many people are tired of hearing about how COVID-19 isn’t really a problem when it is. It’s hard to put up with the comments of people who don’t want to wear masks because “This is America.” Too much!
