Supervisor Kathryn Barger discussed the County’s recovery task force which outlined several industries, especially small businesses, that have been impacted by the “Safer at Home” order.

“I understand the urgency to reopen and know many of the experts the County has assembled for this Task Force have been working hard to develop safe and efficient plans to revitalize their sectors as early as next month,” Barger said. “I remain focused on working with industry leaders and health officials to safely make way for Los Angeles County to reopen by the Fourth of July.”

The task force includes all five supervisors, as well as representatives from businesses, nonprofits and cultural sectors of the County.

About 80 percent of all jobs in the foodservice industry has been lost due to a downturn in business amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to Barger.

The film industry has also been hit, with virtually all jobs in the entertainment world on hiatus due to COVID-19 with all movie theatres closed.

The July 4 date indicates a goal of the full or staged reopening of retail, restaurants, and malls. Sector leaders said many businesses and employees are expected to be impacted over the next few weeks.

More than one million residents in L.A. County have filed for unemployment since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, according to the task force.

An additional 1,324 COVID-19 cases were reported Wednesday. The County total of coronavirus cases now stands at 40,857, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

Ferrer noted case numbers are usually higher on Tuesdays and Wednesdays due to a testing backlog from over the weekend.

Over 379,000 coronavirus tests conducted across Los Angeles County with about 9 percent testing positive for the virus, according to Ferrer.

5,966 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have been hospitalized at some point during their illness, accounting for roughly 15 percent of all positive cases within Los Angeles County.

Of those, 1,531 are currently hospitalized, according to public health officials.

57 new deaths were reported Wednesday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 1,970  in Los Angeles County, according to Ferrer

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to Ferrer, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a total of 961 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

    • 594 in the City of Santa Clarita

  1. I believe that if there are no public fireworks on Independence Day the unintended consequence will be an increased amount of illegal fireworks set off in LA County even though they are not allowed. This situation may set fires whether they be structure fires or wildfires or cause burns or other injuries. Police and Fire Departments may be overwhelmed.
Our politicians should give this scenario some consideration and figure a safe way to to make the public displays happen.

  2. CDC and the public department already showed us they have no clue what to do, it’s time to do what south Korea did “mask’s for everyone and almost nothing closed”

  3. Wow what the heck happened to this state and all others.. this is AMERICA. WE NEED TO CELEBRATE OUR COUNTRY WE WORKED ARE BUTTS OFF TO MAKE IT A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE OUR FAMILIES. and now we cant celebrate our countries birthday because our governors.. if you want to reopen just reopen.. where is all the bad news on influenza or phenomena. Not all deaths and sickness is covid.. CELEBRATE YOUR COUNTRY.. whether you like your government or not…

  4. You can watch a fireworks display on tv, barbecue your own family a meal, and put your flag out. What else do you need? Throwing a fit is not going to be enjoyed by your loved ones. Americans know how to sacrifice when needed.
