Motel In Santa Clarita To Be Used For Homeless Housing During Coronavirus Outbreak

A motel in the Santa Clarita Valley is expected to be used for homeless housing, as Los Angeles County works to curb the spread of coronavirus, officials said Thursday.

Hotels and motels countywide are set to be used as temporary homeless housing as COVID-19 impacts some of the most vulnerable residents in the county, according to Stephanie English, the Santa Clarita field deputy for Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

“The County is working around the clock, 24 hours a day, to mitigate the spread of coronavirus,” English said.

The motel in Santa Clarita is one of many the County is looking to secure in efforts to provide temporary housing to those experiencing homelessness who cannot adequately quarantine themselves.

The homeless shelter in Santa Clarita, Bridge to Home, recently moved to a temporary, larger location at the Newhall Community Center to provide more beds and increased social isolation.

In addition to securing more homeless housing, the County has many other initiatives to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, including the “Safer at Home” order.

“We are working alongside our partners at the state and federal levels to ensure the most effective measures are in place,” English said.

The County is working on increasing access to testing, with emphasis on first responders and healthcare personnel.

One of the first drive-through testing centers in northern L.A. County was implemented this week in the Antelope Valley, with additional drive-through testing centers expected to be put in place, according to County officials.

Along with testing, the County is also working on securing additional personal protection equipment (PPE), such as masks and gloves, for healthcare professionals, according to English.

As of Wednesday, there are more than 3,500 confirmed coronavirus cases in L.A County, with the number expected to rise as testing increases.

  1. Probably not the Hyatt, Valencia either. Not that they are a motel… Or the new place on Railroad, which I fail to see who will use in the best of times.

    • What a great humanitarian gesture regardless of what hotel. We need to assist in anyway that we can. Please, these types are unnecessary and unproductive. This pandemic knows no demographic characteristics. Please be kind.

  2. Is it near the METHrolink?! Great access from Lanc./Palmdale/valley/Bakersfield/LA?!?!

  3. So kind and compassionate its heart warming. Can i have you teach my kids how to be a considerate person?

  4. No Gold star for the Liberals/ACLU/etc., that continue to allow/excuse horrific behavior, instead of having facilities for the drug/alcohol addicts & mentally insane!! Taking them from disease ridden squalor to facilities that could truly help their pathetic lives!! Help them, NOT CODDLE them!!

  5. I talked with an employee at the Motel 8 in Canyon Country on Sierra HWY and he confirmed that the City of Santa Clarita will be utilized to house homeless people for the next 3 months. No word on what controls will be put in place to protect surrounding resident from trespassers on, and loitering around, privately owned homes.

  6. Wonderful, a great choice—right across the street a liquor store & COC with lots of young woman walking/running/biking along Sierra. Can’t wait to see the upcoming mayhem??????☠️⚰️

  7. 5150 them to mental institutions and drug rehabilitation! With the help of the ACLU/Newsom/Garshity/etc .allowing them to slowly die in their daily squalor, now they’re going to ruin more decent neighborhoods! The Liberals/Democrats are ruining society from Seattle to San Diego!

  8. I have to agree with you. I wouldn’t stay in a hotel if I knew that was or had happened. I’m guessing that’s why no one will say what hotel it is.

  9. The CalWORKs Homeless Assistance (HA) Program was established to help CalWORKs families meet the reasonable costs of securing housing. The CalWORKs HA program serves eligible CalWORKs recipients or apparently eligible CalWORKs applicants, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  CalWORKs HA can provide payments for temporary shelter for up to 16 cumulative calendar days, as well as payments to secure or maintain housing, including a security deposit and last month’s rent, or up to two months of rent arrearages.
