Nearly 300 COVID-19 Deaths Reported In L.A. County One Year After First Confirmed Case

Nearly 300 COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Los Angeles County Tuesday, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the first case of COVID-19 confirmed within the county.

An additional 5,927 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, along with 291 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The new cases reported today bring the county’s cumulative total to 1,085,044 positive cases of COVID-19 and 15,592 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case in L.A. County, according to the LADPH.

“One year ago today, Public Health announced its first case of coronavirus in Los Angeles County. Since then, over 1 million cases have been reported and nearly 16,000 deaths; January is trending to be the deadliest month in the pandemic,” read Tuesday’s press release.

As of Tuesday, there were 6,307 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 25 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On Thursday, health officials announced that the seven-day average of new cases had decreased by 30 percent, and hospitalizations had also gone down 7 percent since last week.

Testing results are available for nearly 5,410,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

“COVID-19 transmission remains very high in Los Angeles County. And while we issued a new health order that allows some businesses to reopen, this does not mean that we have stopped the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the LADPH. “The simple fact of the matter is that if we are not more careful than we have been in the past when sectors have reopened, case counts will rise again, creating the need for another surge. I know we’ve been battling this virus for a year now and all of us are tired of the restrictions, but we need to continue to be vigilant for a while longer.”

According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Tuesday.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

  1. The numbers aren’t specific, we need a Dot map to show the areas of density!

  2. 300 deaths in LA county. 10 million people in LA county.
That’s .003% How many more would have died if we took no action? Would it be the same amount or double? If it was 10 times the amount that would be .03%. I think our kids belong in school, and our businesses should remain open. I’m speculating that most of the most vulnerable have already passed away. For societies sake, the most responsible thing to do would be to stop acting responsibly.

  3. About 15,600 deaths in all.
