Over 1,200 Coronavirus Cases Reported In L.A. County, Death Toll Reaches 21

A total of 1,216 confirmed coronavirus, COVID-19, cases have been reported in Los Angeles County as of Thursday afternoon, as well as nine additional deaths, officials said.

An additional 421 cases were reported in a press conference Thursday hosted by officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).

The total number of cases includes 41 confirmed cases in the city of Long Beach and nine in the city of Pasadena, LACDPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said.

Nine deaths have been reported Thursday, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths to 21 in Los Angeles County.

Two previously reported deaths related to coronavirus are no longer being counted as a part of the total, including the Lancaster teen whose death was announced earlier this week, and another individual who was discovered to reside in another county.

The minor’s death is currently under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ferrer reminded asymptomatic individuals that they are also obligated to comply with social distancing, and that symptomatic individuals are obligated to self-isolate if they were found to be infected with COVID-19.

“I know that so many of you are working so hard to comply with all of the social distancing ordinances, and I know that for some families, this is extraordinarily difficult,” Ferrer said. “Let’s be kind to each other, let’s treat one another with respect.”

Health officials are working on a more detailed dashboard to count recovered patients, as testing capabilities and a lack of need for negative tests to be released from isolation have made this aspect more difficult, according to Ferrer.

“You are serving your community by staying home,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

Approximately 9,400 people had been tested in Los Angeles County as of Thursday, up from 6,300 just the day before.

The current fatality rate for COVID-19 has been tracked at about 1.6 percent, which is similar to the national mortality rate, according to public health officials.

As of Thursday morning, the Santa Clarita coronavirus case breakdown was 22 total cases.

The county report on Thursday listed two cases in Castaic, three cases in Stevenson Ranch, 16 cases in the city of Santa Clarita and one case in Canyon Country.

Over 1,200 Coronavirus Cases Reported In L.A. County, Death Toll Reaches 21

  1. WOW, 21 deaths??! We shutdown the county for 21 deaths?!?!? Do you how many die in car accidents everyday in LA county?? Did we stop driving?…..90% of infected people WILL ONLY GET MILD SYMPTOMS!! 4% death rate worldwide and we shut the world down for those numbers??

Anybody remember the swine flu pandemic in 2009?? 60 million Americans infected, 13,000 deaths….and did any of this NONSENSE happen??

  2. Are you a medical expert? A certified epidemiologist? Right, didn’t think so. The number of cases in LA are doubling every 3 days and we haven’t even reached our peak due to inefficient testing. By next week, the numbers cited in this story will be exponentially higher. I’m sure those 21 deaths don’t bother you, but those whose loved ones have died due to complications of this virus or those of us NOT missing an empathy chip like you, are feeling the loss. All of you deniers who think this pandemic is over hyped, fake or media created truly make me sick. It’s your selfish, short sighted and ignorant beliefs/behavior that puts so many at risk. The US has now more confirmed cases of Covid-19 than anywhere in the world, so please shut the hell up already. BTW, even those who recover from this virus may have some type of cardio complications due to the inflammation this viral strain does to the body. Think about that in terms of long term medical costs.

  3. Unlike your message, mine won’t contain any personal insults or attacks. But, you did a very good job. All I did was lay out the numbers for you and well, we all know numbers never lie. Unless there coming from China, which lies about, let’s say everything!! So if you believe “their” numbers then, well then I guess the USA does have the most cases in the world. But, I’m sure you China’s numbers aren’t even close to authentic! This virus is everywhere, so we do have viable numbers from a lot of other trustworthy sources, for the most part. And literally with a 90% FULL RECOVERY rate and the majority of cases being mild. The roughly 3% death rate. The math just doesn’t add up…..we can’t save everyone, I’m sorry. That’s the way the world works. In New York where “it’s bad” the death rate is 1%!!!

So, yes my lack of an empathy chip(I liked that one by the way) does allow me to look at the bigger picture.

What about all the people suffering at home wondering how their gonna make it? What about all the small businesses that will go out of business?? What about all people that are losing and gonna lose their life savings?? What about the people that will and have lost their jobs?? What about this great country that is dying and on life support?? What about all the kids sitting at home, not getting a proper education?? ETC……ETC…

Does any kind of a virus with such a low fatality rate and it is LOW, justify all this chaos??

It’s a cruel world out there, I know, lots of people die every day from/for a lot of different reasons. We can’t save them all. Ridiculous high rate of recovery, FACT! Very low death rate, FACT…the numbers don’t lie.

BTW, don’t give me these “what if’s” and “may have’s” we don’t know any of that, you cannot assume such things. I can then just “assume” the opposite!! Ridiculous, try harder next time.

Good day Star P. That’s how you respond without personal insults, it’s an intelligence thing really.

  4. I appreciate our city, state and federal government officials stepping in and saving as many lives as possible. If these restrictions had not been imposed, the statistics you’ve seen would be much higher..
Remember, we don’t have enough ventilators, equipment or supplies to accommodate all patients affected by this virus. This is one reason for.trying to level out the curve. How would you feel if your mother, brother or sister caught Covid-19 while being extremely ill, you were told sorry, we don’t have enough ventilators to help your loved one or sorry we only have one ventilator left and, we have decided to give it to another patient who has a better chance of survival..The idea is to level out the curve so, people acquiring this virus can be cared for properly., by providing this Goes hand-in-hand with saving many lives..
As for as children sitting at home, this is something you’re really worried about? Children have more time off for year-round school and they’ve been off right now., Either way, most schools have already been disbursed home packets and or computers for home-study. Even without this, their work can certainly be made up.
Jobs and such, are getting help by our federal government but I’m sure you knew that, full pay for employees with unemployment for up to four months. Help to all businesses, including self employed,. In addition to numerous other things being helped by the stimulus package..
Clearly, this is the reason the mortality rate is low so far. Thankfully, actions have been taken swiftly to protect us, so we may get the best health care and as many lives as possible have been protected. Some things can be replaced but human life isn’t one of them.

    • Cuomo said that while 80 percent who contracted the virus self-resolved without hospitalization, the state had around 53,000 hospital beds open and was working to increase that number to around 140,000.

80% self-resolved without hospitalization!! Is it really that bad? The numbers say no!
