Over 13K Los Angeles County Coronavirus Cases Reported In Another Record-Breaking Day

Over 13,000 Los Angeles County coronavirus cases have been reported Friday, in another record-breaking day, with the total number of cases topping 500,000.

An additional 13,815 coronavirus cases have been reported in Los Angeles County on Friday, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The additional cases reported Friday bring the county’s cumulative total to 501,635 according to the department.

“Today I’m making a request to everyone in L.A. County to stay home as much as possible,” Ferrer said Friday.

The public health director said Los Angeles County is in “uncharted territory” with the highest surge in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

There are 3,624 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Friday, 23 percent of which are in the ICU, according to Ferrer.

The number of patients hospitalized has tripled over the past month, according to Ferrer.

The number of hospitalizations exceeds the peak of 2,232 people hospitalized with COVID-19 during the July surge. The daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased nearly every day since Nov. 1 when the daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 799.

As of Thursday, the five-day average for daily new cases reported with COVID-19 is 8,993, nearly double the five-day average for daily new cases the county saw on the day after Thanksgiving, according to public health officials.

50 additional deaths have been reported Friday, with the total deaths across the county reaching 8,199, according to the department.

The State announced a Regional Stay Home Order went into effect at midnight Sunday and would remain in effect for at least three weeks in California regions where ICU capacity falls below 15%.

According to the State, as of Dec. 11, the Southern California Region has 6.2% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining.

In Los Angeles County, the ICU capacity is at 11.8% as of Wednesday, according to public health.

Because L.A. County is in the Southern California Region, the Los Angeles County Health Officer Order is set to be modified to fully align with additional safety measures across sectors and the required effective date. The Order prohibits private gatherings of any size, closes sector operations, and requires 100% masking and physical distancing. The State Regional Stay at Home Order is similar to the existing County Safer at Home Health Offer with additional sector closings.

The Order does not modify existing school guidance. Schools that are open under County protocols can continue to provide in-person instruction as permitted.

Over 4,060,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Friday, with about 12 percent of those tests returning positive.

As of Friday, Dec. 11, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 13,679 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 1,679 have tested positive, and six tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

There are 71 patients in the hospital as of Thursday, Dec. 9 while 473 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

Seven additional deaths have been reported at Henry Mayo this week with the number of COVID-19 patients doubling over the past month.

There have been a total of 46 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 86 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley.

  1. Troubling,
Even as the majority of us Americans have been taking per-cations by wearing a mask, social distancing while avoiding large crowds especially indoors for several months, COVID numbers have continued to climbing as was anticipated by so many of our “experts” over the past eight months, and yet, the wealthiest state in the union, California with a state population of 40 million has only managed to add approximately 536 ICU beds or 7%

    • “majority,” what if everybody did? what if certain people didn’t promote the idea that it doesn’t matter? It’s up to us to stop the spread.

Cases began to rise throughout California in October, largely due to people ignoring safety measures and socializing with others. The current uptick in COVID-19 cases is likely only the start of a much larger surge, which officials expect to hit in the next few weeks due to holiday activities and gatherings.

      • Shadow, source of info? Tracing was showing bars and clubs were the issue. Since all surrounding counties reopened, bars and clubs were shown to be the super spreaders. Where are you getting your information from? Stop blaming others who simply need to go to work to provide for their family.

    • Unfortunately the statement that ‘we have been taking precautions’ is simply not held up by the actual facts – such as cell phone data over thanksgiving. I know that would fit your opinion- however it’s simply not true. We have not squashed this, because a large enough part of the population haven’t helped. Simple as that.

  2. We have had 10 months to figure out a plan and prepare and yet here we are at capacity….

  3. Our “experts” Newsom, LA County Board of Stupidvisors, and Barbara Ferrer prohibited outdoor dining because?
The rates are still going up, but not from outdoor dining.

  4. Good thing Newsom got rid of the 1000 bed floating hospital Mercy ship.Garcetti probably told him it was blocking his view of Catalina island.
