Over 4,000 Los Angeles County Coronavirus Cases Reported Ahead Of Thanksgiving

Over 4,000 Los Angeles County coronavirus cases have been reported ahead of Thanksgiving weekend.

An additional 4,311 Los Angeles County coronavirus cases have been reported Wednesday, for a total of 378,323 cumulative cases, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

49 additional deaths have been reported Wednesday with the total deaths across the county reaching 7,543, according to public health.

The increase in cases comes as the county prepares to shut down outdoor dining options later this week in hopes of curtailing an even greater surge that could overwhelm the healthcare system after the Thanksgiving holiday, public health officials said.

“People mixing with others not in their household has driven the COVID-19 pandemic in L.A. County to dangerous levels. Because L.A. County reached a five-day average case rate over 4,500 new cases, Public Health is working with the Board of Supervisors on additional safety measures to reduce transmission of the virus,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the LADPH on Tuesday. “Public Health is recommending that gatherings only occur with members of your own household and occupancy at all sites are reduced to avoid crowding.”

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 against maintaining the current restrictions instated by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to curtail the spread of COVID-19, meaning that the three-week prohibition on in-person dining for the over 31,000 restaurants in the county is set to begin on Wednesday evening.

Over 3,624,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Wednesday, with about 10 percent of those tests returning positive.

There are 1,682 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Wednesday, 25 percent of which are in the ICU. Just two weeks ago, there were 888 people with COVID-19 hospitalized, officials said.

“The increases in cases and hospitalizations must slow to avoid overwhelming our hospitals and healthcare staff, and save lives,” reads a Wednesday statement from LADPH.

On Wednesday, 93 new cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with a total of 8,946 cumulative cases of COVID-19 since testing began in March. These include:

An analysis of available data indicates that as of Monday, Nov. 23, approximately 22.1 percent of all cumulative cases in and around the Santa Clarita Valley can be attributed to the inmate population at the North County Correctional Facility and the Pitchess Detention Center.

As of Wednesday, Nov. 25, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has conducted 12,107 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 1,305 have tested positive, and five tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.
