Property Taxes Are Still Due April 10, But Late Payment Penalties Can Be Waived

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, property taxes are still due April 10 for Los Angeles County, but fees for late payments can be waived, according to officials.

Although the federal tax deadline has been moved back to July, property taxes are still due as scheduled.  Property owners may still be able to pay late and have their late fees waived by filing a request on April 11 with the LA County tax collector’s office, according to L.A. County Treasurer Keith Knox.

“I understand that this is a very stressful time, especially for those suffering direct effects from this public health crisis, and my office is committed to helping in any way we can,” Knox said. “Los Angeles County property owners affected by the COVID-19 virus may have late penalties canceled if they are unable to pay their property taxes by the April 10 deadline.”

L.A. County and others across the state have offered to waive late fees, but cities and counties don’t have the authority to postpone payments. Property tax deadlines can only be rescheduled at the state level.

“Unfortunately, state law prevents us from changing the deadline,” said Michelle Vega, spokesperson for Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Taxpayers can apply for a late fee waiver if they are unable to pay on time.”

With government offices currently closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, in-person payment cannot be made.  Payments can be mailed in, or paid online with an eCheck or with a credit or debit card. But there is a 2.25 percent fee for using debit or credit cards, according to the LA County tax portal.

While late fee waivers are being offered, officials are asking anyone who can pay their taxes on time to do so.

“We encourage all property owners who can pay their taxes on time to do so,” Knox said. “This revenue helps keep the government running and providing vital services that the public relies on, especially in times like these.”

  1. “Taxpayers can apply for a late fee waiver if they are unable to pay on time.”

When I called about this waiver, they said they would only waive the late payment fees if you were hospitalized because of the virus. A doctors notice would be required stating that you tested positive for the virus, which violates HIPPA laws.
If you were not hospitalized, your waiver would be denied.
The number of people hospitalized is very small.

  2. @ Warren,

“If you were not hospitalized, your waiver would be denied”

How compassionate of LA County at the most desperate time of this century. Most people are upside down, and the greedy county still demands their taxes.

An article I read quotes: ““The Treasurer-Tax Collector has no legal authority to extend the date.”

Understood…. But, the dipsh*t Newsome has the power and authority to delay payments. How about waiting until folks receive their government assistance checks to put food and medical supplies into their homes and then let them make installments – possibly 5 or 6 installments to carry-over until the end of 2020… Give those people who are lower/middle class people a helping hand. Forget about the wealthy folks in Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco… Those millionaires aren’t hurting one bit…

  3. Sachi Hamai and the board of directors need to get involved with this issue. There has been to no directive except to pay on time or file for a late payment waiver on April 11th, after your taxes are already late and leaving you no fall back postilion.
People may have the funds to pay the taxes but if their employment situation is iffy or they are responsible for caring for others, then they feel the need to hold the cash until things shake out.
The county needs to acknowledge the obvious and come up with some realistic alternatives for the citizens of this city and county.
Mayor Garsetti and assessor Jeff Prang also need to address this, we need clear guidance and support.

  4. My wife and I both got l laid-off from our jobs in the film business 2 weeks ago.
With no end in sight and no mention of anything from the Gov. stimulus package we can’t pay our property taxes…maybe we’ll have to use it for food for us and our son who was in college but now also off.
I’m sure the county will not go bust in the mean time.
I will call the Mayor’s office and voice the situations off us and many of our friends and colleagues.
All the banks are on-board with holding off mortgage payments as are many other companies so please
    LA County do the same.
    Sincerely,
    T.Rodman
