Public Health Officials Urge Caution As Restaurants Prepare To Re-Open

Los Angeles County health officials encouraged residents to continue using caution to prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially as restaurants and personal care businesses begin to re-open for outdoor service.

An additional 6,917 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Wednesday, along with 307 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The new cases reported today bring the county’s cumulative total to 1,091,712 positive cases of COVID-19 and 15,897 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

“Every person and every business must continue to take every precaution every day to prevent transmission. None of us want to see this line start to go back up, and the only way to prevent that from happening is to keep doing what we know keeps this virus in check,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the LADPH. “It’s really up to us whether we can sustain these re-openings without jeopardizing each other’s health and our ability to get more schools to reopen.”

Ferrer noted that for elementary schools to reopen in L.A. County, the positive case rate has to be at 25 per 100,000 people, the current case rate as of Wednesday is 48 new cases per 100,000 residents.

As of Wednesday, there were 6,213 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 25 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On Thursday, health officials announced that the seven-day average of new cases had decreased by 30 percent, and hospitalizations had also gone down 7 percent since last week.

Testing results are available for over 5,427,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Tuesday.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.
