Santa Clarita Coronavirus Test Drive-Thru Set For College Of The Canyons

The Santa Clarita coronavirus test drive-thru is set to open at College of the Canyons this week, officials said.

The parking structure at the Valencia campus is expected to be used by the Los Angeles County Fire Department as a drive-through COVID-19 testing site beginning Wednesday, according to college administrators.

“As the County increases testing it follows that the number of positive cases will also increase. As Dr. Ferrer has noted, we know there are many more COVID-19 positive cases than we are aware of and that is why social distancing is critical to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Stephanie English, the Santa Clarita Valley senior deputy for Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Appointments are required, and testing is limited to L.A. County residents experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or who have been quarantined due to exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19, according to County officials.

Those over the age of 65 or with underlying health conditions are expected to receive a priority for the testing, according to public health officials.

“It is important to note the testing site is for first-responders and those who meet the criteria for testing. Those who meet the criteria will be given an appointment and the drive-thru testing site will be by appointment only,” said English.

Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.

The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least until June, according to the County.

The site is set to be staffed and managed by the Fire Department and other County personnel. Those being tested will remain in their cars to reduce the chance of exposure to the virus, according to the college.

“You may have heard Dr. Ferrer also add – that this week will be more important than ever to stay ‘Safer at Home,'” said English. “If it is not critical for you to be out, please stay inside. She continues to emphasize that social distancing and the ‘Safer at Home’ policies are the key to providing protections in our communities.”
