Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth Addresses Coronavirus COVID-19

Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth addressed the community over coronavirus, COVID-19, concerns in a video Monday morning.

Smyth made a public statement that the City will comply with the guidelines that the state and Los Angeles County have set forth in response to the coronavirus, COVID-19.

“(Sunday) afternoon, Governor Newsom announced a sweeping new guidance regarding the treatment and the response to COVID-19,” Smyth said. “First and probably most concerning to many of you is the guidance around the self-isolation of our seniors.”

The SCV Senior Center is said to be closed during the isolation guidelines; however, those in the community are expected to be able to take advantage of the drive-thru meal program, according to Smyth.

“Additionally, the governor has called for all bars, nightclubs, wineries and breweries to be closed, and has asked that all restaurants operate at 50 percent capacity and really focus on delivery and pick-up services,” Smyth said.

“Also, the CDC has issued a new directive that all events … 50-plus should be cancelled,” Smyth continued. “Before those guidelines were a little bit higher of a number, but the CDC has now reduced those for the next eight weeks.”

Currently, City Hall is closed to the public; however, essential staff are still in the office, Smyth said.

Regarding reports of hoarding and over-purchasing at local stores, Smyth encouraged Santa Clarita residents to keep in mind their neighbors, the elderly or those with mobility issues who cannot wait in lines for hours.

“Santa Clarita Water Agency does not anticipate any disruption to our local water supply, so you can access through your taps and continue business as usual at home,” Smyh said. “I think most of you probably heard that Santa Clarita has now had three confirmed cases of the virus. All three of those people are recovering at home. Those who may have come in contact with these positive cases either have already or soon will be contacted by the LA County Department of Public Health and will be asked to quarantine for 14 days.”

Smyth urged Santa Clarita residents to contact a physician for guidance instead of calling 911 if symptoms are noticed.

“We must continue to take those precautions to protect those who are most vulnerable to contracting disease and having the virus and having serious impacts,” Smyth concluded.
