Seven Residents, Two Staff Members Test Positive For Coronavirus At Oakmont Of Valencia

Nine coronavirus cases have been reported at Oakmont of Valencia, including seven residents and two staff members, with all residents self-isolating in their rooms to curb the spread, officials said Thursday.

The two staff members with COVID-19 are currently not working in the community, according to Margie Veis, executive director for Oakmont of Valencia.

“We are in isolation protocol,” Veis said. “Our full community has been in isolation since March 30.”

The second location in SCV, Oakmont of Santa Clarita, has no confirmed coronavirus cases in residents or staff, according to Veis.

Under the isolation protocol at the Valencia location, all residents are self-isolating in their rooms, with the seven symptomatic cases in a separate area of the facility.

“All activities are being done in their rooms, and food is being delivered to their doors,” Veis said. “We are working closely with the Department of Public Health and following CDC guidelines.”

Any staff members in contact with residents with COVID-19 are wearing full personal protection equipment (PPE), and changing after visiting infected residents, according to the executive director.

“Oakmont is able to provide us with N95 masks, gowns and gloves,” Veis said. “We are taking every precaution.”

To further curb the spread, staff members are wearing masks at all times, even when not in contact with residents with COVID-19, according to Veis.

“We have a particularly vulnerable population here,” Veis said. “We are doing everything we can to prevent the spread.”

Oakmont of Valencia is also doing deep cleaning across the community, in addition to the regular cleaning of the facility, according to Veis.

The executive director is keeping “open lines of communication” with residents, families and staff to keep the community informed with the ongoing situation.

This is the second assisted living facility in Santa Clarita with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

One case was confirmed at Atria Santa Clarita, the facility announced Wednesday.

Cases in these facilities are being reported across the county, according to Dr. Barbera Ferrer, the director of the Department of Public Health.

More than 120 nursing facilities and other communal living institutions in Los Angeles County are suspected of having coronavirus infections, according to the DPH.

  1. Stop removing comments!!! I wonder if the SCV community would like to know why you are covering something up here.

  2. So sad for the residents and employees at the newest senior living facility in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Let’s hope that the number of cases doesn’t increase – and doesn’t turn into the nightmare that has impacted senior living facilities such as those in Washington state and Riverside county.

  3. Thank you for the report, Devon. It’s a scary world we live in when we can’t protect our elderly, each other, or ourselves. Be safe.

  4. This is that new facility just built three blocks from our home and literally right across from Rio Norte junior high school…. kids are all over there by the new gas station. I am furious they built this place here… it was bad enough they had the other one … my girlfriend had to remove her mother with dementia from it because they literally left her to die. No bathing, care, and she got blood clots in both legs with pneumonia. I am a public health nurse and will be all over this place to make sure they are keeping this facility clean and the patients safe.

    Be advised Oakmont!

  5. I am feeling uncomfortable and sad that the cases are continuing to increase. I want them decreasing and don’t let the virus get the best of us. I miss being in class and going out places. I would like to get back my privileges.
