‘Sharp Increase’ In Community Spread: 2,500 New Coronavirus Cases Confirmed In Los Angeles County

2,496 additional coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Los Angeles County Wednesday, the 7-day average daily positivity rate is 10.4 percent, a rate that Los Angeles County hasn’t seen since late-April, officials said

The L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases now stands at 123,004 as of Wednesday,  according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

The seven-day average of cases has increased in the past few weeks, according to LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

Los Angeles County Coronavirus

There are more than 2,000 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, Ferrer said. This number has increased greatly in the past several weeks.

“Each day, as we share this information with you, we know there are people across our community who have suffered tremendous loss. For those of you mourning the passing of a loved one, we wish you healing and peace,” said Ferrer. “We need our residents to repeat what we did just weeks ago if we are going to flatten the curve again. If we can’t get the infection numbers back under control by the end of July, we will see thousands more people that require hospitalizations and that could easily overwhelm our health care system.”

Testing results are available for over 1,229,000 individuals as of Tuesday, with 9 percent of all people testing positive, according to public health officials.

65 additional deaths have been reported Wednesday, for a total of 3,642 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 3,417 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 1,419 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 51 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,810 in Castaic*
  • Six in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 77 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 15 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 34 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Three in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • One in Sand Canyon

*As of Tuesday, July 7, officials had recorded 1,317 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 493 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.

Additionally, 31 cases have been confirmed in nearby Acton, as well as 16 in Agua Dulce.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department.

As of Wednesday, July 1, Henry Mayo has conducted 3,273 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 349 have tested positive, and 151 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.

Some local patients are tested multiple times, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to hospital officials.

There are 19 patients in the hospital as of July 1, while 110 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

A majority of all deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

  1. I would like to know something: if everything was open and now partially closed(?) if they can be enforced. Then why can’t a retired military person, who passed away from this virus have a military ceremonial funeral ? This person has served this country to come home and die of something like this is shameful. Our family is on hold for everything. There was no closure and no visitor’s were allowed just FaceTime when the nurses had time.. Bless their heart’s. It’s very heartbreaking to wait. For those of you out there that think this is a joke, fraud or some cooked up mess from the kitchen think again. It’s not on your mind and it doesn’t effect you right? Wait til a family member of yours dies or a good friend of yours that’s when the light will go on and you’ll say “this is real”.
