UPDATE: Trick-Or-Treating ‘Not Recommended’ By Los Angeles County On Halloween Due To COVID-19 Concerns

Los Angeles County Public Health stated Tuesday that trick-or-treating and haunted houses were “not-recommended” during the upcoming Halloween season.

“Since some of the traditional ways in which this holiday is celebrated does not allow you to minimize contact with non-household members, it is important to plan early and identify safer alternatives,” reads an official statement from the County.

Among activities “not recommended” this Halloween are door to door trick-or-treating, trunk or treating, gatherings or parties with non-household members and carnivals, festivals, live entertainment, and haunted house attractions.

“The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health would like to share information on how to take part in this holiday in a manner that reduces your risk of developing COVID-19,” according to the county. “Since some of the traditional ways in which this holiday is celebrated are not permitted this year consider some safer alternatives that are listed below.”

The County has permitted the following activities:

  • Online parties/contests (e.g. costume or pumpkin carving)
  • Car parades that comply with public health guidance for vehicle-based parades including:
    • Drive-by events or contests where individuals dress up or decorate their vehicles and drive-by “judges” that are appropriately physically distanced
    • Drive through events where individuals remain in their vehicles and drive through an area with Halloween displays
    • Drive-in events where individuals can receive a treat bag (limited to commercially packaged non-perishable treats) or take away items from an organizer while the participants remain in their vehicle
  • Halloween movie nights at drive-in theaters (must comply with the public health drive-in movie theater guidance)
  • Halloween themed meals at outdoor restaurants (must comply with the restaurant protocol)
  • Halloween themed art installations at an outdoor museum (must comply with the public health museum guidance)
  • Dressing up homes and yards with Halloween themed decorations

Ed. Note: This story has been updated to reflect changes to  LA DPH policy, changing “prohibited” to “not recommended”

UPDATE: Trick-Or-Treating ‘Not Recommended’ By Los Angeles County On Halloween Due To COVID-19 Concerns

  1. Well I’m so glad LA county gives Us a list of permitted activities, what would we do with out their guidance???
Can’t wait to see their thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah lists!

  2. It would be awesome if the city did a drive through haunted house (or houses, one scary and one cute for the littles). Maybe a drive in theater. It would be a great fundraising opportunity and/or possibility for a charity event or food/clothing/etc drive. Just thinking out loud on how to make the best of things.

  3. Has anyone been out lolol tons of parties, bbq, weddings. I don’t think anyone is abiding by these ridiculous rules any longer. Pool parties have been insanely popular and so much fun! Bring on the Halloween parties!!??

  4. Our block is quarantine quitters. We will be trick or treating in our neighborhood as we do every year. No more Covid nonsense. Marshall’s and Target are packed beyond belief, yet we can’t celebrate a holiday. It’s 6 weeks away btw!! My family can walk around and pick up candy from a bowl. Like we do every year. Get a grip people.

  5. Halloween is redundant.

  6. Our street is still planning on decorating and having Halloween.

177 days in to the 14 day flatten the curve….

  7. Hey Alice is your real name Karen?

  8. Alice
You seem uptight. Maybe you should get out and protest or something. Cause protests are good and Halloween for the kids is a big spreader. Is this what your listening to on CNN

  9. Alice, you truly are the idiot here

    • Sorry, man, but in a group of idiots here with all their selfishness right out in the open for everyone to see, Alice seems to be the only one who has any common sense and doesn’t have sh*t for brains! It’s jerks like you who spread his virus and then cry when you feel your rights are being stepped on! Thing is, they could make things mandatory, with NO QUARTER for excuses for those not complying! You could be ARRESTED or not complying! If things get more out of hand, they could DEMAND your compliance! No BS excuses, no nothin! There is a serious need to get a handle on this ASAP, or we may see harsher rules implemented at some point! Spoiled, selfish people like some here could be in for a rude awakening if you don’t just do what we have to do now to get past these terrible times! Quit being a whining baby, and do what you’re told! You are no more important than anyone else, even I’d you THINK you are!

      • Look at the numbers. Thede are based on the article numbers. So here goes of those “positive” test died of COVID-19 .002%. We had more deaths from Corona viruses in the past. You should have given the total population in LA County 12,447,000 with positive test .002% that means you have 99.998% chance of not contracting the virus. Deaths vs total population. 00004%. So IF you do contract the virus, you have a 99.99996% chance of serving the virus. And there is no reason for foul language or calling people names. Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

      • sweetie, there was never a pandemic you can put your thumb back in and go back to watching your movies now.

      • Unless I’m mistaken this is still a free country we are not ruled. You are a clown just like Alice just keep drinking the kool aid.

  10. “Prohibited” That sucks! I was planning to dress up as Alice and go scare everyone.

  11. Lol Ray! Your comment made me laugh out loud!

Agree! We can all shop at these stores with long lines. Have you been in a Marshall’s or Homegoods lately? You can even try on Clothes in Old Navy. Btw…how are any of those places “essential?” Look at Walmart, Costco, Home Depot…lots of people standing around. Our grocery stores have even stopped sanitizing the grocery carts. I guess their over it too. But God forbid we celebrate a holiday! These LA politicians already don’t want our kids educated now they want to infringe on the holidays??? Seriously…wake up!

  12. Dear LA County Bite Us! Not Only will we have a Halloween Block Party but we will be passing out candy and ALL 20 kids on the block will be going Trick O Treating.

    • Why would you want to open your doors to large numbers of people during a pandemic? I agree it would be sad to not have traditional trick or treating, but our strong kids should be able to handle skipping a year unless WE get over dramatic and overprotective about their snowflake feelings, right?Stay in, like you would if it was raining cats and dogs! Or, better yet, wait and see what is safe by the end of October and then decide instead of making it political now.
Not really feeling like buying candy for anyone after reading these comments. Don’t expect your entire neighborhood to agree with you.

  13. These people that believe everything they here on CNBC or cnn or our local tv stations are Dems, how can everyone be a dem when that’s the party that hates America. They took away the 4th and now and in the future. I say to them, get the hell out of America. You dems aren’t Americans. Biden…path of destruction of America

  14. We still live in a free country! We will take their recommendations into consideration. Done. Ok, we are still doing trick or treating as that is our decision and not the politicians. All most Democrats want to do is control and regulate everything. The problem is that is not freedom and also the government is so big they cannot oversee anything efficiently. America was founded on limited government not “limitless government.”
