Two Additional Santa Clarita COVID-19 Deaths Reported, 77 Recovered, Discharged From Hospital

Officials with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital reported that two additional COVID-19 deaths Wednesday have been confirmed at the hospital, while 77 total patients have recovered and been released since the pandemic began earlier this year.

Hospital officials could not release any information on the deceased patients due to privacy laws, including things such as age or health history.

The two additional deaths brings the total number of deaths in the Santa Clarita Valley to at least 20, according to officials.

As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 1,126 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 701 in the City of Santa Clarita
  • 37 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 322 in Castaic*
    • As of Wednesday, May 27, this included 253 cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 50 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center.
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 33 in Stevenson Ranch
  • Seven in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 21 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Newhall

Additionally, 11 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in nearby Acton as well as seven in Agua Dulce.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials have administered a total of 1,555 tests as of Wednesday, 208 of which have returned positive, and 1,289 of which have returned negative, with 42 still pending, according to hospital spokesperson Patrick Moody.

Some patients have been tested more than once, creating a discrepancy in the numbers, according to the spokesperson.

While nine patients are hospitalized due to COVID-19 as of last Wednesday, 73 have recovered and have been discharged, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Two additional deaths have been reported in the past 36 hours, bring the hospital total to 10.

The patients are being treated on a designated floor of the newly-built patient tower, with each patient receiving the correct level of care without using beds in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the hospital.

Other health centers in the Santa Clarita Valley are also conducting coronavirus tests, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

A total of 48,700 coronavirus cases have been identified across the County as of Wednesday, as well as an additional 53 deaths, bringing the Los Angeles County total death count to 2,195.

The DPH revealed a total of 17 deaths had taken place in and around the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding communities. 15 of the deaths were attributed to the City of Santa Clarita, one was attributed to Castaic, and one was attributed to Acton.

An additional death was reported last Monday at Henry Mayo but has not been added to the Public Health data.

Public health officials are not releasing recovery numbers by city, according to the department

Due to testing shortages, these numbers are only the confirmed cases, which officials say could be much lower than the actual number of coronavirus cases in Santa Clarita.

A Santa Clarita testing center opened on April 8 at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.

This site is one of several that are up and running around the county, and the first in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Testing is set to run from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m., seven days per week, according to the college.

The Santa Clarita coronavirus testing site is expected to continue at least until June, according to County officials.

Residents are encouraged to stay at home, according to the county public health order.
