Young Adults Continue To Drive Coronavirus Cases In Los Angeles County

Young adults are continuing to drive coronavirus cases with an additional 3,266 COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County confirmed on Wednesday, officials said.

The L.A. County total of cumulative coronavirus cases now stands at 164,870 as of Wednesday,  according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

“We’ve seen that nearly 60 percent of the cases we’re now seeing are among our young adults and that hospitalizations are also increasing among young adults, but 75 percent of those who are dying right now are older adults,” Ferrer said. “This is all extremely distressing, remembering that these numbers add up to thousands of individual people: grandmothers and grandfathers mothers and fathers brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends and neighbors.”

On Tuesday, over half of all new COVID-19 cases were people under the age of 41, according to the Department of Public Health.

Recent increases are due to, in part, celebrations during the Fourth of July, where infections take up to two weeks to present symptoms, said Supervisor Kathryn Barger on Monday.

The supervisor also encouraged residents to express their first amendment rights safely by practicing social distancing and wearing masks.

There are more than 2,200 people currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout L.A. County, Ferrer said. This is the fourth day in a row where the LADPH is reporting this number of hospitalizations.

27 percent of those currently hospitalized are in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to Ferrer.

Testing results are available for over 1,578,000 individuals as of Wednesday, with 10 percent of all people testing positive, according to public health officials.

64 additional deaths have been reported Wednesday, for a total of 4,213 people who have died due to coronavirus in Los Angeles County.

92 percent of all COVID-19 deaths in the county had underlying health conditions, according to public health, further encouraging those with medical issues to stay home, if possible.

As of Tuesday, a total of 3,928 cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Santa Clarita Valley since testing began in March. These include:

  • 1,839 in the City of Santa Clarita*
  • 69 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country
  • 1,839 in Castaic*
  • 12 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
  • 94 in Stevenson Ranch
  • 30 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia
  • 37 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde
  • Four in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon
  • One in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
  • Two in unincorporated Sand Canyon

*As of Tuesday, July 21, officials had recorded 1,318 cumulative cases among prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility, and 493 at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center. Those cases are counted in both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.

As of Monday, Henry Mayo has conducted 4,793 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 555 have tested positive, and 339 tests are still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Moody.

There are 26 patients in the hospital as of Monday, an increase of three since July 15, while 151 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March, according to Moody.

An update on COVID-19 cases for the Santa Clarita Valley is expected for Wednesday afternoon.

  1. Hmmm, I wonder why? Perhaps too much protesting/rioting a few weeks ago.

    • Exactly! Everyone in our pathetic government pretends to be shocked at the rise in cases. This faux surprise at the results of tens of thousands of young people running amok is ridiculous. Unfortunately, it is working. God our parents and grandparents would be so ashamed of what we have become.

  2. Anyone maskless may have contributed to the spread, whether they were maskless at a variety of protests(open our businesses, BLM, support our police, and most recently open our schools) or out maskless chatting with friends, celebrating July 4th, shopping, etc.

    • And here is Anne. Falling right in line.

    • Well… that’s Just not true. Masks actually do very little to stop the spread. Do the research. Masks are a false sense of security and the only way to stop the spread is social distancing and personal hygiene. It’s very interesting how social distancing is a requirement unless you’re protesting America

      • Social distancing and masks were not a concern during riots/protests for George Floyd. But people attacked the teenagers protesting for schools to reopen. CLEAR DOUBLE STANDARD. Typical these days with a Democrat.

  3. Oh how about this! Young adults infecting their parents in order to get their inheritance sooner, because they
cannot manage their finances. Got to have the money now.!!!
