At-Large Suspects Flee Into Thousand Oaks Mall After 5 Freeway Pursuit From Castaic

Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for three suspects after they allegedly led officers on a 5 Freeway pursuit Monday, which started north of Castaic and ended in Thousand Oaks, officials said.

On Monday around 11 a.m., a California Highway Patrol officer with the Newhall Area Office initiated a traffic stop on a dark grey Mercedes Benz with no license plates that was reportedly exceeding 100 mph on the 5 Freeway north of Castaic, said Marco Marin, a spokesperson for the CHP Moorpark Area Office.

“The suspect vehicle yielded to the center median of southbound I-5 near Smokey Bear Road,” Marin said.

The officer made a left-side approach on the vehicle and requested the driver roll down the driver side window, according to officials.

“The driver suddenly accelerated away in the suspect vehicle,” Marin said.

Air support and a unit with a spike strip were requested once the pursuit was initiated, according to officials.

Around 11:13 a.m., the pursuit was discontinued on the southbound 5 Freeway near Parker Road, after officers lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle.

The officer in charge of the pursuit requested the information be relayed to the Ventura County CHP division in case the suspect took SR-126 toward Moorpark, according to officials.

Around 11:30 a.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials began pursuing the suspect’s vehicle on the southbound 23 Freeway, Marin said.

“At 11:34, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department discontinued their pursuit,” Marin said.

The suspect’s vehicle was spotted by officers pulling into The Oaks shopping mall in Thousand Oaks, and the suspects fled into the Macy’s department store, according to officials.

Moorpark law enforcement officials responded and set up a perimeter.

The three suspects were able to escape, but Moorpark Area CHP officers recovered the vehicle and are collecting video evidence from the mall.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
