ATM Robbery Suspects In Custody After Leading Law Enforcement On High-Speed Pursuit Through Santa Clarita

A high-speed pursuit Tuesday night ended with two suspects in custody after allegedly robbing a victim at an ATM at gunpoint near Walgreens in Newhall.

At around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies received reports of an armed robbery at the Walgreens on Lyons Avenue and Valley Street in Newhall, said Sgt. Curt Messerschmidt, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Detective Bureau.

“The victim walked to an ATM at the location, and as he returned to his vehicle he was approached by two males, one of whom was armed with a handgun,” Messerschmidt said. “The suspects ordered the victim to give them his money, and he complied.”

Initial reports stated that the suspects stole about $700 from the victim.

The suspects fled the scene in a red KIA and were found moments later by deputies on the northbound 14 Freeway near Sand Canyon Road.

Deputies attempted a traffic stop south of Red Rover Mine Road but the vehicle took off and led LASD deputies and CHP officers on a high-speed chase on the freeway that reached speeds of around 90 mph.

“A successful spike strip of the vehicle was conducted at Avenue K and the 14 Freeway, however, the pursuit continued,” Messerschmidt said.

The vehicle exited off the freeway on Avenue I in the Lancaster area, leading law enforcement on a chase through residential streets.

“A second spike strip was conducted on the vehicle at approximately 10th Street East and Lancaster Boulevard,” Messerschmidt said. “The suspect vehicle came to a stop and the front passenger exited the vehicle and began to flee.”

The driver surrendered to authorities while the passenger fled on foot.

At around 7:17 p.m. deputies were able to detain the suspect who had fled, bringing both suspects into custody.

Avion Blackston, and Devonte McClain, both 19 and from Lancaster were arrested on a slew of felonies including robbery, according to officials.

Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with both suspect’s bail set at $100,000, according to arrest records.
