Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested After Foot Pursuit On 5 Freeway

A man suspected of attempted murder was arrested just south of Santa Clarita early Saturday morning following a brief foot pursuit on the I-5 Freeway, officials said.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office were monitoring the I-5 Freeway early Saturday morning for a vehicle wanted out of Yuba City on an attempted murder charge, as they had received reports that the suspect driving the car may have been heading towards Mexico, according to Officer Josh Greengard with the CHP.

“Officers responded to areas of I-5 in an attempt to locate the vehicle,” Greengard wrote in an official statement Saturday.

Then, at approximately 1:46 a.m., officers reportedly located the vehicle traveling southbound on the 5 Freeway within the city of Santa Clarita, according to officials.

“While additional officers were getting into position to conduct an enforcement stop the vehicle suddenly came to a stop in traffic lanes and the driver fled on foot,” Greengard wrote.

The driver reportedly ran across the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway and climbed up a dirt embankment, and a perimeter was set up with the assistance of the Los Angeles Police Department, according to Greengard.

At 4:39 a.m., the suspect, 38-year-old Adrian Vivanco, was taken into custody.

Following Vivanco’s arrest, Greengard added that officials found a handgun in the vehicle that he had been driving.
