Two attempted murder suspects are in custody after they allegedly carjacked and shot multiple people Monday night, forcing a full 5 Freeway closure in Lebec, north of Castaic.
Around 7 p.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Fort Tejon Area officers were in pursuit of a stolen Honda Civic on the 5 Freeway, previously pursued by the Taft Police Department, said Adrian Lopez, a spokesperson for the CHP Central Division.
Due to heavy traffic and public safety concerns, officers discontinued the pursuit on the southbound 5 Freeway south of SR-166 in the Bakersfield area, according to Lopez.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., the CHP Bakersfield Communications Center received reports of a man shooting at vehicles on the northbound 5 Freeway south of Laval Road just north of the Los Angeles and Kern County borders, Lopez said.
“Central Division detectives responded to the scene and contacted two separate victims in two separate vehicles who were each suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds,” Lopez said.
CHP shut down the northbound 5 Freeway for approximately 12 hours as law enforcement investigated the shootings.
During the investigation, detectives learned the two suspects they had pursued forcibly carjacked three vehicles and shot two victims before fleeing the scene before the arrival of police, according to officials.
Through investigative leads and with the assistance from the Taft Police Department, Travis Joe Lee, 24, and Fatima Miranda, 29, both from Taft, were located on Tuesday at approximately 5:30 a.m. in their hometown and taken into custody without incident, Lopez said.
Lee was transported to Kern Medical Center due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound he sustained to his hand during the carjackings.
Lee and Miranda were booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, carjacking, kidnapping, felon in possession of a gun and ammunition, vehicle theft, grand theft and criminal conspiracy, all felonies.

This was entirely north of Grapevine exit. It was a Taft-Bakersfield issue near the outlets mall. Never was close to LA County. “Lebec” includes that area and it’s developments, not just the spot on the map up in the pass.
Good ole Taft, Lancaster & Palmdale areas!
No Bill, not Palmdale nor Lancaster. Ride your scooter to the library and look at Google Maps. Find Taft. Draw a line from Taft to Lancaster. Notice the line is long. Now, roll some toilet tissue around each hand and try to find your anus.
